Timing Chain
Has anyone had their timing chain snap? I'm thinking I should probably replace mine since it has 177,000 miles on it... before it's too late.
I see some people on j-body having them snap then when the cams quit spinning correctly, valves are open when they shouldnt be and vice versa and BOOM. Major internal damage to head, pistons etc. (The guy I bought my RSM 62mm TB off of for $100 had his snap)

I haven't seen it as a maintenance item but I hear people changing them after 200,000 miles just for pete's sake.

100,000 and then you start consider changing them... overtime they CAN stretch and become fatigued.

Timing chains don't really need maintence, belts however, thats a completely different story. Granted, I have heard of a few occasions of engines with timing chains jumping time, but typically for that to happen something tramatic has to happen, like a major over-rev from a missed shift.
My dad is still driving a 2000 Taurus with over 500k on the odometer and not one bit of problems from the motor, amazingly enough. He's got another car, he just wants to see how long he can drive it before it requires major maintence. Most expensive bill so far was $700 for new tires. Drives it to work pretty much everyday.
Things probably going to rust apart before it breaks down, but with him living in Texas, I dunno.

I actually like that body style of Taurus. I drove that thing for about 3 weeks last year while my 3 was ripped apart with no motor in it, was quite impressed with it. Had plenty of power, was comfortable. And, it didn't suck down gas as bad as I thought it would. Plus, you can fit a lot of dead hookers in the trunk.
I offered to buy it off him when he bought his new car, and he said "Fat chance". That thing would have been a supreme winter beater. Oh well, I'm probably better off in the Alero, pretty sure I would have been bored out of my damn mind driving an automatic.

Because you're at your wits end trying to drive an automatic, You wouldn't be able to process the information required to drive a Manual.
hehe, Don't ya just hate me?

All i care about is that my 3400 automatic is faster than any 5 speed alero (with intake and exhaust)..... the turbo and supercharger guys are a different story
And i dont want a stick as my dailey driver......i like automatics better, no shifting

that's just because your lazy. Turbo any 5 speed alero with the help of a competent tuner and the 3400 regardless of setup is left in the dust.

True....i am lazy. Yea it would be cool to have a 5-speed.....but i would get sick of it after a while. And yes.... i know a 5-speed with a turbo can leave me in the dust..... cause i dont plan on putting a turbo in my car I dont think any 4-banger can go up against blackjack though......

Its all a question of preference, I love manual, had 3 automatic and 2 manuals. First time I left my manual for an auto was because I thought that for a Daily Driver it would be better, but I was bored fast. Thats why I got another manual.
Theres a lot of benefit from having a manual : better control of the car, sportyer driving, better mpg (with same engine, of course), manual tranny are less likely to brake compared to auto tranny. Also, I do believe manual tranny is lighter and in situation makes some repairs on the car easier. Less sensors therefore less problems.
I give it to you, it sucks sometimes in the traffic, but if its only that, hell I can live with it. I'm sure there is others + side of auto tranny, but at the end its all a question of needs.
