Fi 18'' SSD

Is there enough room for an ssd 18" woofer in the trunk of an alero. i wanted to build a full trunk box with the sub facing twoards the trunk lid. loading into the car. Would there be enough room to get the Cubic ft for one 18?

How much money are you investing into this project? What amplifier are you running? What is your current electrical? (batteries, alt, etc) I just want to see what kind of rms you'll be sending your subwoofer.

Based on these numbers you could probably get a away with running a slightly smaller box. Some members may tell you that 6 cubes would be easy to make, but in my three boxes, I could only come up with about 4.5-5ish after subtracting sub and port displacement. The other thing with our trunks is that you will not be able to get an 18" on the vertical face of the box, you will be running the sub facing up. As far as trying to meet box specs, I don't want to stray you away, but possibly more power on a 15" would get you what you need. I run a 15" DC Audio Level 4Xl on around 3k. She does well.

As you can see, even she is pushing it for height. By the time you build the box high enough to barely get the 18" facing back in a 5-6ft^3 box, you'll be "choking" the airflow off from your cabin. If you know what I mean. But running the 18" facing up, expect some SERIOUS trunk rattle. lol A 15" facing the rear would do you just fine.

I actually did two 15"s as my first setup, in a sealed box.

That was a while ago though. It honestly all depends on what kind of speaker you want to settle with... And do you already have the amplifier?

Sealed would be A LOT different. What does it ask for sealed specs? And i'd reconsider the amp choice. Can you link me the amp? There is no Hifonics 1.1000.

This is also an Alero forum, not a car audio forum. lol

But really, that's a part of Hifonics new Hfi line. They are the 2011 models. They say rms, but those are actually maxx ratings. Don't believe me, I've messaged Mike from Maxxasonics myself.

Their BXi mono-block line would be what you want. That would be their 2009-2010 line. The BXi 1210d, 1610d, 2010d, and 2610d. The 1210d would give you 1200wrms @ 14.4V. PLUS, the BXi line is currently cheaper at their BNIB price since they are the "older" line.

I've ran more Hifonics than you probably ever will my friend. But since then, i've stepped up to Crescendo, and soon I'll have my order in for my Sounddigital SD5000.1d doing 5,000wrms @ 12.6V. And 6,500wrms @ 14.4V.

I'm just here to help you out man. I've been there and done that. Learned from my noobish mistakes, and have helped quite a few people out here, SMD, CACO, CA, D4S, DSBP, and Realm of Excursion. I basically had to teach myself, so a lot of things are easier for me to understand.

k i'm not the best guy on matching subs and amps, but that google link amp posted looks WAY underpowered to run one decent 15, let alone 2. 2 15's you should be up in the 3000 peak range.

You are correct in a way. BUT, the biggest mistake one can make is to go by the "Maxx" or "Peak" numbers. These are unrealistic ratings that are more of a selling point. If the circuitry of a 3,000 watt Maxx amplifier saw 3,000wrms, the internals would burn up, the casing would melt, etc. I believe the SSD asks for around 800wrms. So in his case, for his budget Hifonics amp, the 1210d would be great with on them,as long as he was careful on the gains. And the 1610d would be great on a pair of them. If he runs sealed, he can fit two easily. But, with the 1610d, he also has to consider the Big Three upgrade as well as running thicker wire. (Beef up his electrical a bit.) Different speakers have different ratings and parameters. In his case, he is looking to go wih the lower line of Fi Audio drivers, the SSD'. They are basic subs and don't require a lot of power to get loud.

Though, I would prefer a single Fi BL over a pair of SSD's.

These are really my favorites right now. But the wisdom for what you need is right here. Most of your questions for the sealed 15"s and power can be answered in 30 seconds. But when you want to start experimenting, here are some good resources.

Ryan from Ohio will become famous soon enough
When will people learn?

You dont buy a top fuel dragster and run E85 fuel in it.

Same thing with audio. Dont buy a big sub and run it off a sparkomatic amp. Its a total waste. A big sub isnt shit without a big amp behind it- period. Also stuffing a big sub like that into a sealed box isnt good either.

If that is all you can afford in amps then look at the HiFi 12" subs. Thats a matched set then. Given your relative newbness that would yield the best results.

While Hifonics/Maxxsonics makes some good quality amps they also make some amps that arent so hot- like the HiFi series and the Crunch branded amps.

What kind of budget do you have to work with? IF you are willing to accept the expert advice you can get by people with years upon years of experience Im sure the few of us would take some time to help you out.
