Decades ago, it was among the best pro studio/ reinforcement stuff you could get, not for autos, but the vintage units I use require huge enclosures.....

Totally not related to the conversation:
Why would they even bother making a sub with so much impedance? To waste more electricity?

Because two 8 Ohm subs wired in parallel is 4 Ohms. 4 is 2 Ohms. 8 is 1 Ohm.
Its just a matter of wiring options.
Now what idiot buys a single 8 Ohm subwoofer is the real question.

I hope you weren't referring to me, I bought the sub for far less than it was worth and before I knew the specifications.
Thanks for clearing that up, though. I didn't think about it that way.

No not you the original purchaser that knew what they were getting.
You should of been more weary to the situation though.
Always pack a DMM if your buying used subs. You can check the coils to see if they are still good and to know what Ohms the sub is.

Go l5 or l7 or go home... Two 12's at 800 rms a piece should probably hit a bit harder than (nothing special)... i've hit over 141 dbs off of two 15" petra subs, discontinued in 1994 i believe, getting 250 rms a piece. Unless the box setup is bad or your wiring is wrong, what, i'm not sure. Maybe you've built up a total tolerance for bass? What are the specs of your box anyhow? Dimensions? Cubic volume per sub? Port size/tuning?
