no heat

hey i need some help trying to figure out how to get the heat working again in my 2.4 01 alero.

so far i have attempted to "burp" the coolant several times with no luck, i have tried to change around the relays also no luck, i have done a compete flush of the system,

the wierd thing is before it got really cold outside it had started to work again, but once it got really cold outside (when i needed it the most) it quite working again.

any suggestions

Heater core? Maybe a thermostat? (If gauge is reading weird)

I will add that it maintains temperature never overheating...also he didn't mention new thermostat 2k miles ago we have got it going briefly several times only for it to crap out again
Personally my biggest suspect is heater core at this point but it is a good thing to get other opinions before that "fun" project and i dont want to cost them any more than i have to

never mind with the help of 03glgold i figured out that it was actually just a broken knob inside the car, the temperature select middle knob had a broken piece.

Brother we all have at least one story like that! I spent over two grand on an issue no one could find.... the fix, a 25 dollar crank sensor

Yup, I thought I had gone that route. I worked for GM until a couple of months ago when GM announced that head office was being moved to China. We had a mechanic from northern Ontario come to work at my dealership and bloody nailed it when I told him the problem I'd been chasing for three years. Bloody guy never missed a beat, said "there is a second crank sensor at the back of the engine, replace it" and the prick walks away. I look it up, buy the sensor, he installed it in less than five minutes and the problem was instantly gone man.... best and worst day ever at the same time, was quite perplexing to say the least

I feel stupid for not catching it sooner as one of my knobs is broken on the inside and did similar...i guess i didnt think of it because mine did it when i pulled them off to try and clean them better so i switched it instantly instead of having to diagnose an issue with it

Since this is a thread about heat...i got a question about mine, on the knob where you can select how much it blows out, there is five little dot, well only the last 2 work in mine, any suggestions to fixing that?

others have had to rebuild their fan...don't ask me how because I haven't done it yet, but that would be my guess

Bleeder resistor pack.

Remove the sound deadening panel on the passenger side, and you'll see it right by the blower motor.

Two screws to remove, two to replace, and you'll probably notice that the film resistor it's made of is burned out.

AKA Blower motor resistor. Easy fix. Hardest part is getting it in and out because it's in a TIGHT spot plus you have to wedge yourself in there to see it lol.

mine does the same i just have not had the money to go and try replacing the resistor yet, but that would be my suggestion as well, i am told they are fairly cheep.

Not too bad, compared to say a heater core.

Local prices may vary, but should be competitive once you factor in shipping on just the resistor from RockAuto.

I'd go for the AC Delco if I were you - yes, it's pricier, but do consider how long the CURRENT one lasted.
