Burning oil, or maybe leaking?

Hey guys. I've started to notice that my low oil pressure light comes on when taking hard left turns. I just assumed it was normal; oil moving away from the pick up and kicking the light. I changed my oil about 1,000 miles ago, and its starting again. Last time this happened, I checked the dip stick, and it was low. I'm pretty sure its burning oil, or maybe even leaking. My question is, where do these LD9's usually leak from?

Jack that car up and look under there for a leak.

This is what happened to my Delta right before I spun a bearing in the old 307

Yea, its not leaking from anywhere. Just burning....

I guess I'll just add when needed, such a pain in the ass though.

Oh yeah, and my car does that whole vibrate at idle thing too. Or if I park on an incline with it in park, it like 10 times worse. Pop it in neutral and it goes away.

Yeah, I took a look at them and they look halfway decent. It was weird, right after I looked at them, I went out and tried it again, and the vibration was almost not noticeable; it was pretty nice, haha.

Your oil level is low? Or are you just assuming you're leaking/burning oil because the light comes on?

The light is normal on hard left turns.. fill it to 4.5 quarts instead of 4 to help eliminate that. Very common question on JBO and Quad4Forums.

I thought the lights means low Pressure... not really level, even tho they are related. Thats how I lost my 2.4, all started with that light while turning..

Yeah, I was used to the light coming on. No big deal. Until one night I noticed the light was coming on, and it was starting to make a ticking noise. Pulled over, checked level, no oil on dipstick. I've driven almost 2500 miles since last oil change, and its burned about a quart of oil.

i dont really know what the correct amount of oil needed to be burnt to consider normal but i'd look around and make sure theres no oil leaking anywhere before you start thinking the worst. ex. piston rings?

Well, I've noticed there is some oil in the cam valley (?) like under the 2.4 cover. But its so minimal, I never really payed any attention. Other then that, shes clean.

what I have come to understand, from countless minutes of research, is that about 1 quart per 1k miles is normal on high mileage engines. Once you're burning a quart every 500 miles, then worry. Try running a heavier oil to reduce the amount your losing and switch to high mileage oils as the have additives to help reduce the oil loss. You can also try the stp stop smoke treatment. It helped quite a bit but you'd have to use it for several oil changes. There is no quick fix or miracle cure.

My mom had a 90 Olds ninety-eight, with 288k miles on it, and it never used any oil. I just sold a 94 Dakota with about 140k on it and it also didn't use oil. If you treat a car right it shouldn't ever burn oil.

switch to Valvoline max life, I was burning oil and once switched to max life it has stopped.

also for the vibration. change your spark plugs and fuel filter and it will go away, I had that issue when I first bought my car and changed both no more issues anymore with vibration at idling

truth, I've only had one engine in my truck burn oil, the 2nd 350 started to burn with 300k..427 went KABOOM with 150k or so, current engine has around 320k and doesn't burn or leak a bit, and the truck is still nice with 990k, the reason I only buy GM

you know what, I use to believe in mobil 1 but because its a higher mileage engine go with the high mileage max life, I don't believe in synthetics unless the engine has been using it since day one

OK first off this situation on turning hard and oil light coming on it not good.

The 2.4 is known for #3 bearing getting dry and then spinning on your ass. So if you keep up this situation you are putting yourself in a greater chance of having a spun bearing. The 2.4 takes 4.5 quarts of oil. Put 5 quarts in and this will help. The common place for oil leak is the cam towers. However i would check around the timing chain cover and also oil pan. If you think your motor is burning it, check your TB and see how much oil and residue is up in it. you could also pull the PVC hose and see how much blow-by you have. Basically if air intake tube is oil soaked and TB looks like tar on the inside then yes the motor is burning the oil and it needs rebuilt but until then keep a close eye on the oil level.
