Thumbs up

Here's the situation, I'm driving home this morning, doing about 50mph when I switch to 5th gear. The road was straight, no hills or curves and anything like that, if it matters. I'm in 5th gear doing about 60 and the car starts making some kind of weird noises like the engine was bogging down. I look over and I'm in neutral. What could have made this happen?? My right hand was on the wheel so I didn't do it on my own. I can't get into the shop until noon on Friday. Should I park it until then or is this just something minor?? ANY help would be greatly appreiciated!!

EDIT: If it makes any difference, the car is a 2001 GX.

I think there are several screws holding a spring and ball in place, and when you shift into gear this is what actually holds the shift fork in place. The spring might be worn out so it can no longer apply enough pressure to hold it in gear. It's simple enough to fix but I can't say how to do it because I don't actually own a 5 speed

If you don't have a place to work on it or the tools then bring it to the dealership, it's likely a quick fix, and it's nothing to worry about...

However, if that ISNT the problem, then it COULD be a damaged shift fork or something, have you badly missed a gear before?

Thanks Final, I hope it is as simple as that. It would prolly be better for me to take it to the dealership though... I'm not too handy with tools I don't usually drive it all that hard, with the exception of when a Civic cuts me off... But yea, I just shift gears normal and haven't had any problems missing gears, grinding them or anything like that.

my truck did this when the transmission went out, i was doing 95, it slammed out of gear, smashed my knee up...

but only my 4th gear worked after that... since all your gears still work, it's probably a problem like final is talking about.

you might have troubles keeping it in gear, but as long as nothings grinding, you should be fine driving it till tomorrow.

you're not the only one with transmission problems, mines been slipping for the past few days. guess it's time to get a better tranny, gonna need it for the boost later on anyway.

well i had a friend of mine look at it tonight. he drove it and it did the same thing to him. he seems to think that the transmission is going out of it. he also said the clutch is going out, which shouldn't have anything to do with it jumping outta gear. good thing it's still under warranty. so yea, i'm taking her to the shop tomorrow to see what's going on. i'll let ya know what happens.

Well I took her to the shop today and come to find out, Final was right. Yay!! I did get a pretty good deal tho... they changed the oil, topped off all the fluids, fixed the gear problem, adjusted the clutch, rotated my tires and put new brake pads on the front for me. Oh and yea, they ran it thru the auto car wash too but it's gettin a hand wash and wax tomorrow, if mother nature doesn't show her ugly face again...
