Woo! now its the Power Steering
yeah. as the title states, in addition to my car driving like crap due to either a transmission or fuel pump failure in the happening, it seems that my power steering has decided to begin the ungraceful demise as well. Today, i was taking my girlfriend on a "date day" to the beach and we were on our way home and decided to stop at taco bell. Well, i pull in to taco bell and go to tuen into a parking space and no power steering. So she starts laughing because i totally am wrenching on the steering wheel and then suddenly it kicked back in and worked fine. Well, all was fine and we ate and went to her house until about an hour ago when i decided to coem home. So i had to back up into her driveway to turn around to leave her street and when I cut the wheel to the left all the way, there was a very loud "SCREEEEECCCHHHHH" followed by a metal on metal sound. So I thought I had run something over and freaking out threw the car in park to check if i had hit anything. nope. so i get back in the car and cut it the other way and the same sound (i have to cut it because there's cars directly across from me parked and not much room for any manuvering). Anyway it isn't screeching anymore but it is making the motor really bog down when i turn the wheel at an idle. Is it dying? if so, how much do pumps cost and could I install it myself? and how do I know if i have the optional variable effort steering compared to standard?

ive gone through two powersteering pumps in less than 6 months.. the stock one was fine.. only reason i replaced it is because i thought the damn thing was whining, but it wasnt.. it was an idler pully which was about 8 bucks at auto zone.. and the "new" one i had made the screeching noise you're talking about then it started throwing fluid all over the engine bay, so i got another one.. and now THIS "new" one makes a metal on metal sound at WOT in lower RPM's, and it whines very loud when turning back and forth sitting in one spot at idle or traveling below 5 mph.. so hell if i know. lifetime warrantee so if it craps out i just go up there and grab a new one. pretty easy to install too.
EDIT: yes, its full of fluid, the fluid is clean, and i followed instructions on removing air out of the newly installed pump.. do they make certain brands, or just oem replacements, because the ones from O'reillys suck.
