Question power steering fluid change?

well... i think it may be too late for my power steering because it works one second and quits the next but i did notice that the level of fluid is where it should be but its extremely brownish-black. I was wondering if changing it would clean some crap out of the pump and whatnot and possibly fix the problem. it only quits working when the engine gets warmed up so i am thinking that maybe it has lost some of its cooling capabilities over the years and is now like burnt tranny fluid? any other ideas on what could be wrong with my car? do p/s pumps go out slowly like I'm describing?

I'm about to flush out the power steering system. What did you guys use for fluid? I checked the owners man. but it says to use GM part # blah blah blah.

I'm guessing that I can use Dexron III in there. Yes or no?
