i'd just use 5w30 no matter what the mileage. if your burning oil, then you could go to 10w30

^ It doesn't we have put 10w-30 in my car since the first oil change. It actually runs better imo than with 5w-30, but to each their own. The only difference between 5w and 10w-30 anyway is 5w is meant to work better in colder conditions meaning anything lower than 0 degrees Fahrenheit. As for high mileage oil 100k miles isn't enough to switch in my opinion. I mean I have 189k miles and I still haven't switched to high mileage oil yet. I might switch to high mileage the next time I do an oil change though. If you do end up switching to high mileage though keep in mind your not supposed to switch back to regular motor oil once you have started putting high mileage oil in there. That's because it's not good for your engine.

um...its been colder than that plenty of times here, and i have never had an issue starting my car.

My bad man. I didn't mean it wouldn't start I don't know why I put that. When we lived in Chicago the Malibu didn't have one either and we didn't have a problem. I didn't proofread that one before I posted so my bad.

^ It shouldn't hurt anything no, but since your in New York your better off sticking with 5w-30. I say that because for one if you have had that in your car the entire time why switch now. Two 10w-30 will work great for you during the summer, but you might experience some problems with starting your car during the winter because 10w-30 is better meant for places like Arizona and where I live where it doesn't get cold to often. That's because 10w-30 is meant to run better at higher temperatures while 5w-30 is meant for colder temperatures and climate. So it shouldn't hurt anything, but I wouldn't switch seeing as where you live.

I've been using 5w-30 since I got the car 35k miles ago. That and High Mileage oil (if it makes any difference?). I'm at 165k miles now.

ya. my dad runs 10w30 in his car all year round (gm LT1 v8) but thats what it calls for. his is kept in the garage all winter though so it's always warm when he goes for a drive.

myself, with the 5w30, the coldest it got this winter was -40 Celsius i believe, and i didn't have the alero plugged in and she started. so not sure if i can thank the oil, but oh well.

and a good thing about 5w30 is its not quite so stiff at cold temperature, so for those cold start days, it'll lubricate faster (basically what that01olds said)

Awesome...living in Minnesota I know all about temperatures with a "-" in front of them...interestingly enough, -40C is the same as -40F...I wonder why they even bother with the temperature at those levels...I mean can a person really tell the difference between -30 and -40? Any time it gets below -10 they should just say "It's damn cold outside today!"

lol. i can tell. it's effing cold. go to sit in the car, and the seat is literally rock hard. my car is normally green, but at times white with frost. wiper blades barely move. and thats crazy. a car isn't meant to start like that. i was actually impressed

Not that this has anything to do with a 3400 but I had a 88 Bonneville with a 3800 and it had 350k with 5w-30 Mobil 1. Too bad I had to get rid of the car due to rust.

Summer: 15W-50 Mobil 1
Winter: 10W-30 Mobil 1

But my engine only has 15,000 on it. You can play around with oil weights. You don't need any special "high mileage" stuff, I used conventional Valvoline 5W-30 all the way up to when the engine was swapped out at 190,000. That engine is still running at about 230,000 perfectly fine.

if your running a formula 1 engine.. yes. if not, its a waste of money. normal "good" oil works well.

Royal Purple has a bad reputation and the super expensive oil is a waste. Eneos and the like actually have lower ratings than the more common widespread oils. Check www.bobistheoilguy.com if you really want to look into oil details.
