i have a 3.4 liter 02 Alero i think its a GL2, well when ever i turn or i go over bumps my car creaks alot, i belive its just my springs need replaced *excuse to get my car lowered* but my dad thinks its a tie rod and a rubber bushing, i wanted to ask you guys, since my dad is car stupid. and well im new to the whole working on cars. So who is right him me, or are both of us wrong?

Well, the Alero's as well as all other N body cars have the same problem. If it is what I think it is, it's actually in the steering column. There's a GM service bulletin out on it. It's nothing that could cause a problem, just more annoying than anything. Without actually being able to hear it though, I could be wrong.

If it's happening when you are going over bumps, then it probably is suspension related. The creaking in the steering column is only noticable when you are turning, and it's more intermittent than anything. I would point to your upper strut bearing/bushing assembly, or it could be a ball joint or tie-rod end. When was the last time the car was inspected?

Well, if anything, don't take it back there for service. They will try to tell you that there is something monsterous wrong with your car, and it will cost a million dollars and a month to fix it.

Is it only doing it when you go over larger bumps and the car bounces a bit? Mine does it too. I go over train tracks and sometimes I'll get a little squeak when the car bounces up and down a little. I think it's the springs/struts on mine. And it really only does it when it's really cold.

Is the creaking coming from the front or the back?
