Strange hissing sound...

When I was pulling apart my HVAC console in my 2003 Alero I kept hearing a hissing sound when I went to remove the 2 wired (orange/black I think) connectors for the center knob. The two wires are enclosed in a clear rubber conector. It's for the Cold/Hot knob. I would wiggle them a little then hear a hiss. Didn't seem right to me since they looked liked like electrical wires. I do admit that the clear rubber did seem to be a weird conection there. Any enlightenment on this?
