ok, I got a new shift knob for my alero and now there is a lot more of the shaft showing. it has the automatic tranny and I dont like the looks of the shift knob, but I think it would look sweet if it had a boot to cover the shaft. So I am thinking of pulling out that part of the center consol and replacing it with one out of a manual tranny alero. I think it should fit, but I was wondering if anyone had a picture of the interior of a manual transmission alero so I could make sure. or maybe someone already knows if it will fit or not.

actually ill be putting a boot on my stock shift knob next monday. just go to a junk yard and grab a shift boot (try and make it from a grand am or alero if possible) and slide it in, you may have to cut up a bunch of it to make it fit properly but if you go to the junk yard, just take notes on how its set up and try and match it. once i get it done next week ill post pics

you don't have to do all that. just go to pepboys and buy any shift boot and put it on. they're all generally the same.

I understand that, but the boot wont have anything to mound to on the bottom because I have an automatic transmission, if I get that part of the console out of a manual tranny alero, then it will.

do exactly like exnine did. that plastic sliding piece will work fine for holding the bottom of the boot. just don't make the top look gay like that. and don't use a coat hanger. just take off the sliding piece as one part, and then put your boot in and put that on top of the boot to hold it tight. pretty easy.

Okay well first of all. Im not going to take full credit. I got the idea from another member on the site. whos name I can't recall. Here is his pic. It looks almost exactly the same. [pic included]

I just got my parts from ebay, LINK I think he went to pepboys. I took the boot from a real manual shift boot, And cut the little frame off. And Mounted it just like 2fst4u said. It Didn't hold as tightly as I wanted it too. So thats why I used the coat hanger. (And its just a 6" straight peice, I guess I should have specified.) I just stuck a couple holes through the boot on the underside and used pressure on the piece of hanger. and now it holds great and doesnt feel like its ever going anywhere.

For the knob I used this one. LINK
You can use anything though.

Good luck, Take pictures!

i took off the whole center console, its not that difficult, and attached everything from underneath. just used all the same holes that were already there. did the brake lever while i had it all apart too.

Yours is very clean looking Turtle. What did you use for both boots? Just some material that you cut yourself?
