Lightbulb future motor swap

i got a 3.4 v6 but i just hate the AT transmission and the amount of power it sucks up.

and i realize swapping my tranny for the Getrag 287, is way too much money.

so i figured i should just swap motors and trannies. i was thinking about buying one of those fully built 2.2 eco's from mantapart. all ready for boost, but they are 4 grand and then about 2 more grand for a turbo. im on the fence about it. i could also just buy a 2.2 and just keep it laying around and build it up until its ready to be dropped in. a tranny shouldnt be too hard to get a hold of (build that up aswell)

i was also thinking about the lovely LSJ motor (2.0 SC eco) im not too sure on the fitment of this motor. but possibly the 2.0 mounts are adaptive to the 2.2. this motor is slightly less (if i remember) compared to the fully built 2.2. everyone should know what this motor can do. i know if i had it i would twin charge it.

i am definatly keeping the alero till the wheels fall off and dont plan on getting a new car unless this one is wrecked or stolen. so why not.... i love how well it can stand out, so i'll just continue to dump money into it just like any other car.

opinions and info welcome.

IDK, If you go with a different tranny than the 4t40 or 4t45 you may have to do custom axles. I'm not sure, but you might wanna check up on that.

The 2.0 in the Cobalt is the motor your talking about, correct?, remember that the Cobalt is lighter than an Alero.

You can built up a 3.4 motor well too, and then put a 4t65HD tranny on that bitch, and your golden. But custom axles will come with that project. I'm looking into this with the new motor when I blow this one up. Stage 2 cam, Stage 2 heads, Stage 2 PCM, maybe a harder crank. It will be sweet

yeah im talking about the cobalt/ redline motor. i love the whine

but you dont think i would have to switch axles with a 2.2 ecotec swap do you?

dont get me wrong this 3.4 is pretty stout and it keeps on impressing me, its just i hate the tranny. and i hate having a big heavy AT suckin up my power.

if there was a cheaper way to make it manual i'd keep the motor but, meh so much effort. : /

Good idea to swap in a built Ecotec...tons or potential for lots of power. The Getrag will take a little work though. You have to cut off the tranny mounting points and weld on new ones. Then you have to worry about the clutch pedal, master cylinder, etc.....all the things that come with a manual. It's not exactly a weekend job. I also plan on swapping in a built, turbo Eco and yanking my turbo 2.4 and I originally wanted the Getrag but found out it'll take a little more work and downtime than I wanted. So I'm going to build and Eco and get a fairly new auto tranny and make a few mods to that to handle some more power, as well as get a better, higher stall torque converter to get more power to the ground. After all is said and done it should put about 315hp to the ground on 20psi....all on just a lightly built, mostly stock engine.

You should try driving my eco gerbil with the AT! Talk about pulling a load....It will make your V6 seem like it's a V8.

Car and Driver just came out with a writeup on the supercharged 2.0 in (I think) a Pontiac Solstice or sumthing...anyhow, the engine was rated around 260 HP and looked awesome!

Beyond the fit and cost issues, I would think the front suspension of the Alero would need a thorough upgrade to handle all that power? Not a cheap route when all said and done.

no. suspension deals with weight, not engine power. since the 2.2 is lighter than the 3400 there shouldnt be any issues that i can think of.

you might wanna look into the new 2.4L ecotec engines as well...supposedly they are the future of the ecotec engines for performance...that or the 2.0L

I don't really see how you're saying the 287 swap will cost that much, yet you are considering a engine and trans swap? That seems like it would cost way more and be much more involved.
