Syrut Mounts

How hard is it to do front strut mounts and about how much are they?

  1. Take the wheel off.
  2. Take off the 2 nuts (21mm?) that hold the strut to the wheel hub/spindle thing.
  3. Pound out the bolts that the nuts were attached to using a sledgehammer.
  4. Take off the 2 nuts and one bolt where the strut attaches to the body up top (this is all that holds the strut in now, so hold the strut because it'll fall when you undo them)

Negotiate the strut/spring/mount assembly around the brakes and tie rod and such and get it out of the car.

Use a spring compressor and compress the coil spring so tension is not on the strut mount. Use an impact preferably and remove the top nut and then the strut mount just slides off.

(top 3 bolts)

you get a spring compressor from the auto parts store, free rental (you pay deposit and then get your money back in full when you return it.)

The only part you need an impact for is the top nut to break it free from the strut rod. The rod spins freely so if the nut is stuck it's just going to spin the rod when you go to turn it.

So hand should work? What size is the top bolt that holds the mount on?

could have sworn the top nut was a 19mm but mine could be different from the air ride setup i have, or i could just be wrong. double check it before you go buy anything.

instead of the 3/8's use a half inch one its easier lol. but yea use a long breaker bar if you have any 19 or 21 mm nuts go for it.

and Grim its a 19 in the rear I believe or 18

The damn strut piece (that's inside the boot) wants to keep spinning when I go to loosen the mount bolt. What do I do? Not using air tools

put a rubber/nitrile glove over it and hold it with a wrench. i used that to tighten the nut properly. i haven't tried that method to remove it though, you'll need 2 people more than likely: one to hold the bar still and the other to loosen the nut
