I just thought I'd post this for anyone else that might be in a similar situation:
I recently purchased a 1999 GL with a 2.4, price was really good due to a knock/rattle when going through the gears at shift points as well as at around 3K, I already had a 2001 with a 2.4L that my daughter wrecked, so I figured I'd pull that & drop it in, my searching said that it should mostly work except for possibly an EGR issue, and Injector impedence mis-match. Well after about 14 hours of pulling two engines & stuffing one in, it fired right up, well, that is after noticeing that I'd gotten sidetracked & forgotten to plug in the IDI
The only thing that I found didn't swap straight across was the O2 sensor in the exhaust manifold, the 99 had 1 wire, the 01 had a 2 wire.
Now I just gotta fix the damn drivers side window & the fuel sender.
