check your springs... thats what happened when one of mine snapped - it hit the tire and made a squealing noise, then it shifted again away from the tire.

Springs can break on these cars????
If that's what happened, that would explain everything. On my Escort the back springs are encased in a plastic sleeve that retains water and therefore promotes rust. When I changed my rear struts on the car, it had broken springs on both sides, but I never heard anything. One way to tell (without actually inspecting the springs) is to see if there is a corner of the car that's sagging lower. So if your Alero is parked on a flat surface, Use a tape measure to see one corner of the car is suspiciously lower than it should be. At least this way you won't have to wait until you get home and remove the wheels to see if anything looks wrong.
Given where you live, cars are known to rust a lot so it would seen that the speculation of rust causing something to break would be quite reasonable.

My spring broke on my car... Luckily it broke when the car was parked at home and wasn't on the road.

yes, I had the front right spring break when i was leaving the movies one night - it made a big pop then a squealing noise as it rubbed on the tire then it shifted about a 1/4 inch away from the tire when I hit a bump in the road. upon inspection when i got home I saw the bottom coil had snapped off and was completely gone leaving a jagged edge. i replaced it temporarily with a junk yard strut.
then, a few months later, I was rotating the tires and noticed the same thing had happened to the left rear. At this point, I went ahead and replaced them all with monroe quick struts. car rode like it was brand new!
