I know this will work for the 2.4 (since I have one) and presumably will work on the 2.2 since its the same tranny, so here we go....

tools needed: 2 quarts of dexron-III complient tranny fluid and
5/16" allen wrench, if your like me you will get a whole new set 8)

first thing you need to do is get the front of the car up on jackstands and take off the driver's side tire.

next, put a drain pan under the level check hole and the drain plug, found here

first take out the check level plug

then pull the drain plug

this may take a little persuasion

once all the fluid is drained

replace the drain plug
and remove the cap on top of the tranny and insert a tranny funnel

start filling the tranny with the fluid of your choice, must be dexron-III complient, until the fluid starts coming out the check hole.

then replace the check plug, remove the funnel and replace the fill cap.
put the tire back on and lower the car and ur done, there, easy.

whole thing took me about an hour with pix and figuring out what was what

THe Haynes manual states that this should be done every 60,000 miles.

I just changed the tranny fluid, filter and gasket on my '01 automatic.

WHAT A PITA!!! for the auto, you have to take the pan off (read, KEEP EVERYTHING SUPER-CLEAN).

yea the manual looks easy seeing as they have a drain plug, the autos are a different story, dropping the pan with 7 quarts behind just spells MESS lol.......but yea id say every 20-25 for hard driving and 25-35 for normal......
