it's the lower intake manifold. the upper intake manifold connects to it, and the fuel rail runs between them.

it's probably not a job you'd want to tackle yourself if you're not even sure what it is.

i'm sure someone else has had this done and can give you an estimate on the cost.

I would say both, especially since RSM sells them together.
http://www.rsmracing.com/portedintake.jpg, pic of manifolds together
http://rsmracing.com/us/main.htm, main page for RSM, go to Oldsmobil, then Alero, then 3400. I would say get both ported because, as everyone says, you only get as much airflow as the smallest hole in the engine will allow. No point in porting the upper intake manifold if you don't port the lower intake manifold.

I think that is not the right pic. THe linked pic showes a 2.4 liter intake a Upper intake manifold for the 3100.

Yeah get them both. Why take apart your motor more than you have to.

Cost me about $400 to get the manifolds and TB swaped out, but my mech def cuts me a lot of breaks

Yeah, I know the one on the left is for the 2.4, but the one on the right maybe only the upper for the 3.1, but it shouldnt' be much different for the 3.4. That is the picture that they have on their site.
