LIMG cost/time?

Hi guys, i know it's been covered... but couldn't find the straight answer. what is the expense of the LIMG fix? self and approximate shop price? also, how long does it take?

I am trying to find my grandma a car for under 2k... and i found a 3400 but it needs a fix. dunno if it's worth it.

700-1200 if a shop does it. $100 if you do it yourself. Should be able to whip it in a weekend no problem.

Book time on this job is 6-9 hours, most shops can do it in 2 to 4

How about head gasket, turns out that is more likely the problem. no compression

2003 with 80k miles... worth a fix for purchase price of 1500 or so?

alerored04 is an unknown quantity at this point
I'd offer a grand and see if they bite. Just toss out the shop numbers. Car 1k, shop fix if it's the hg $1500. The car is worth about $2500-3000.

I would offer $500. Can't hurt, I had somebody come down from $1200 to $500 when I flipped a grand am.

Head gasket- fun times.

The head may be warped... Then what?

Head gasket kit on up is what, like $200. Head bolts are $30ish. You will need to do oil change and new coolant right afterwards, so another $40-50ish. However doing all of that takes some time...

Its nice you are trying to help granny out. However she will be PISSED if this car leaves her sitting. For that reason alone I would avoid it.

I sure as hell wouldnt pay $1500 for a car with a head gasket gone on it. They are selling it because they cant fix it and know the car is not worth paying a shop to fix it. So that gives you a TON of leverage. I would offer them scrap price and play hardball if its what you really want to do. Maybe slightly higher than scrap. Because the ONLY person who is going to buy that car is a person who can fit it themselves... Thats the bottom line.
