service engine soon light

Alright about a week ago or so my "service engine soon" light came on. Just the other day when I put gas in I noticed that the gas cap wasn't on properly. So I figured once I filled the tank and put the gas cap on after a while the light would hopefully shut off. It's still on, I only have a little over 46,000 miles on it and it's a 2001. any suggestions???

SES light. Nobody can guess that except with a diagnostic scan as previously said at autozone, pepboys, checker, etc.

If its your gas lid it won't turn off right away. The computer needs to see the vaccum seal is proper through several cycles before it will go ahead and turn it off.

This happened to my parents car and they had to take it to a shop or back to dealer and get them to reset it. It was told to them that they need to turn the cap numerous times or that light will appear until its reset.

ya thanks everybody. I took it to a dealership and got it scanned. it came up with the code for the evap. leak or something. So they reset it for me and it hasn't come back on.
