PCM/BCM Reprogram VINs..... ???
Hey
Just completed a swap in a 00' Alero 2.4L, switching out engine, trans, PCM, and PCM to parts from a 02' Grand Am 2.2L....
Having some problems...
Airbag light is on....
Code is B1001 Option Configuration Error...
Code is due to the fact that the VIN in the PCM and BCM does not match the code on the SDM and maybe also other controllers in the car.
So, I need to rename the VIN on the PCM and BCM, but leave the internal electrical programs intact, due to the powertrain being different. VINs should match the vehicle itself, if possible....
Anyone have any ideas to make this work...?? Or who may do this in Michigan? It can't be done with a Tech 2, at least the PCM can't, from what I have been told.

Umm....ok.... these airbags are good. I plan to sell the car. They need to function correctly. If the airbag light is on, the airbags will not work, period.

uh, yeah! they don't put idiot lights on dashboards just to make you smile at the picture of the guy with an airbag in his face! it means there's a problem with the system and it needs to be fixed.

Can you change the VIN on the PCM and the BCM so that the guts will stay 2.2L, despite the VIN being from a 2.4L Alero?

I don't know what you're asking.
You put in a 2.2L PCM and engine in. I can make that 2.2L PCM's VIN be the same one that the BCM has.

I replaced the PCM, BCM, engine and trans. All these parts are from the same car. My car is a 00' Alero, originally equipped with a 2.4L.
I need the VIN on the PCM and the VIN on the BCM both to match the VIN of my 00' Alero, so that all modules in the car match. But, I still need the PCM programming to be for a 02' 2.2L, so that it runs right.

Oh... I'm not sure if it changes both the PCM and BCM. It might. I know I can link the PCM and BCM together, that might work.

it actually sounds like the PCM and BCM are not communicating properly.
if i do a Relink PCM/VCM action it might fix it
wish you were closer than kalamazoo

Everything works just fine, just not the airbags - airbag light is on. Everything communicates, its just that the BCM doesn't like the SDM having a different VIN number. So the BCM has to be set with the same VIN as the SDM.(Same as car) And the BCM and PCM have to match, in order for stuff to work.... so both PCM and BCM need just the VIN "renamed", nothing else changed.
I pity the poor service tech who has to fix this car in the future...

So after looking it over, you most likely have a code B1001.
You can either. Reprogram the VIN in the PCM/BCM to that of the chassis/SDM.
-OR-
Obtain the SDM from the donor vehicle
-OR-
Replace the SDM
I don't think it's possible to program a new VIN to the SDM... If it was you'd use this procedure

Important
The AIR BAG indicator may remain ON after the SDM is replaced. After programming the SDM part number into the BCM, cycle the ignition switch OFF and ON. This turns OFF the AIR BAG indicator and clears the DTC.
Install a scan tool.
Select the Special Functions option from the SIR Menu and press enter.
Select the Setup SDM Part Number in BCM option and press enter.
Follow the procedure on the scan tool display.
Cycle the ignition switch OFF and ON.

or possibly this procedure may even help.

Ensure that the following conditions exist in order to prepare for BCM programming:
The battery is fully charged.
The ignition switch is in the ON position.
The data link connector (DLC) is accessible.
All disconnected modules and devices are reconnected before programming.
To setup a new BCM, access the SPECIAL FUNCTIONS menu on the scan tool to program the BCM. Select NEW BCM SETUP and follow the instructions on the scan tool.
If the BCM fails to accept the program, perform the following steps:
Inspect all BCM connections.
Verify that the scan tool has the latest software version.

Airbag light -fixed! This took some time and the Tech 2. If anyone wants to know, it was throwing a B1001, option configuration error, due to the VIN being different in the BCM and airbag control module (SDM). So, I followed the alldata instructions for installing a new SDM. I typed the vehicle in as a 02 Grand Am (same as BCM) and went under SIR and special functions. Went under new part number programming. Went through the 10 minute test, got back out, erased the code, cycled the key, and started the car up with no air bag light. The car now thinks it is a grand am, but who cares. No service lights on, everything works.

Good to know. I didn't know if the SDM would take a re-configuration like that. Sometimes modules like that are only programmable once.
I'm surprised if you found a dealer that would do that...
