Sounds like you have a lot to learn my friend. My recommenation to you is to at least have some one around who knows what they're doing if you decide install your own system. Many things can go wrong afterwards if it's not wired properly and you're going to be kicking yourself with all the trouble shooting later.

You should be warry of capacitors. They're designed to store energy and discharge it. Think of a 9 volt battery on your tounge. It dispences it's energy over time... Now some capacitors are designed to hold gods third leg and discharging it wrong will give it to you all at once we're talking 1 INSTANT you just got violated by god, please fall down and don't get up.

To be honest a 1/2 or even 1 farad cap is more trouble than it's worth, having to deal with charging and all. Just leave out the cap, IMO. Aftermarket radios have a output labeled remote, put a switch in between that. My stock radio didn't have a remote wire so I wired up to a switched fuse and put a switch in between that.

Like Ryan put so boldly...LOL Its not a good idea at all..yes it can be done but it isn't necessary. More importantly, if you put a switch on the main power for the amp you will be discharging the capacitor every time, and as soon as you flip the switch you will be zapping it with a ton of power at once..Not good unless you want to buy 70 dollar caps all the time. I have a cap in my car and no switches of any kind on the main power for the amp. Big NONO

Ack, just lick it like a 9V battery...

To answer your question Im not 100% sure on that myself. I have a couple questions regarding caps I need to research. How to safely discharge and how to test them.

i'd think the biggest trouble of switching the power line... would be how to connect a wire thats, at least 8ga, to a switch. it'd take a good electrician to pull that off, and they'd know better.

essentially, what your looking to do is use the remote wire on a switch.

from headunit(remote wire)-----switch--------amp

this will allow you to turn the amp on and off, but only when the car is on. so if by mistake you leave it on when you leave the car, it turns off anyway.

Those remote wires are there for a reason, and for this exact reason. (on both sides. the amp side and the headunit side. they built it there to be used, don't ignore it)

and my buddy who was somewhat of an audio/electrical genius always told me, to just connect a small 12V lightbulb to the capacitor. something that requires very little current. When the bulb goes out, the current is gone. And led would work too. And since they run only .02a, that thing will be VERY discharged when it goes out... it'll just take a while.
