MAF frequency should be proportional to air speed (highest at WOT), but with the screen removed, the multiple elements in the MAF may not individually receive the proper amount of air to measure at all air speeds due to turbulence. There can be more such variations when the throttle plate is suddenly opened or closed. I tried a few sizes, screened and unscreened, but the unscreened units could actually cause the engine to stumble or die at low throttle positions. The unscreened units flowed more air at WOT (higher MAF freq, grams/cylinder, less pressure drop, etc.) but were less accurate (poor drivablity) across the full range. Not to say you can't come up with a calibration for an unscreened unit that could work, but save yourself a lot of trouble and go with a larger, screened MAF, IMO.
