Any grand am/alero trans will fit. But buying it your taking the risk of another blown trans.

I still want to know what troubleshooting you have tried on the existing transmission. I don't think what you did was necessarily all that bad unless you drove it a lot like that.

Mine did that, i think it was a bad torque converter.

it has a different gear ratio so you will have to reprogram the computer for a gagt tune

Actually no, the top speed is lower because it has a numerically higher gear ratio.
It will get you off the line faster, but the top speed will be lower. Don't worry about it, your not getting up to top speed in an Alero anyway, esp with a stock PCM tune.
The PCM will have to be reprogrammed for the GAGT tranny. The GT tranny has a 3.29 FDR, the GASE and Alero have a 3.05. Both trannies are a 4T45E. The 4 banger and Malibu are 4T40E
The 2004 and up tranny has a different different type of pump. Not sure if it has to be reprogrammed for that pump, but I do know it works in a different way. Also 01-03 Tranny has a smaller axle seal than 99-00. Just get the correct seal and everything is fine.
Source: I have a 2003 GAGT Transmission in my Alero with 21,000 miles

That's what transmission shops always say, since they can make more money by selling you a new transmission. That and most are too incompetent to actually repair a transmission.

Have you checked the fluid level? When was the last time you changed the transmission fluid and filter. I would also check for codes. Transmission codes won't necessarily light a dash light, since it's not emissions related. On my other car it definitely won't light a dash light.
How many miles are on this transmission?
Check the TPS (Throttle position sensor).

His sig says 240,000 miles...I would be willing to believe that it is bad, especially since it is exhibiting symptoms known to be caused by bad torque converter

sure about that? I had no problem getting up that high YEARS ago on my stock tune. Top speed in an alero on stock PCM is like 107ish. Not too hard to get to
