Need audio assistance...

So, I'm in the process of hooking up my rear 6X9's into my amp. Its a 4-

channel amp, I've got my 2 subs on channels 3 and 4 so I figured I would put

the 6X9's on channel 1 and 2 get a little bit more boom. Well, I splice into the

stock wires going to the speakers so they should receive both the normal

audio and the input from the amp. Well I wired up one speaker and went to

test it...Because I'm lacking the screws to actually attach the wires to the

amp atm i figured I'll just touch the wires to the channel 1 out put to see if

my wiring did the job. Keep in mind now...the negative wire to the speaker

wasn't anywhere near the amp, i grabbed the positive wire, touched it to the

amps positive channel 1 output, and it sparked and blew my amps fuse. How

the hell did that happen? the negative wasn't even touching so obviously

there was not a complete circut... I'm completely baffled.

Sorry for the confusing way i type

...because you didn't look at it straight, and you touched the positive to the negative.

well the lights coming on does not mean that the amp still works what kind of amp do you have. You should never have any power going to your amp while hooking it up well that is what i do at least i put the fuse in last.

I would do that before you do much more. Or take it to a shop.

That right there was instant fail.

And to answer the question...

Drum roll please...

It happened because you had head unit power being applied to the amplifier. Keep in mind that the output from an amplifier is AC current....

You just cant do that. You cant bi-wire stuff for maximum boom. It doesnt happen and as you found out it dont work.

I highly suggest reading the above site so you learn the proper way of doing things.

lol Ouch.

Anyways, either run your 6x9's off of the head unit, or the amplifier, never try both. You are thinking things through so much to the point that it looks like you didn't think. No big deal man. Just remember the ONLY things that get put INTO the amplifier are +, -, Rem, RCA Red, RCA White. Then OUT of the amplifer +, - into whatever piece of musical reproduction equipment you choose. Obviously you understand enough to put together a system in general, but next time only choose one source.

From your situation, regardless of the amplifier, I am sure it will do MUCH better on your speakers by itself than the head unit does in general. Then put the subs on channels 3 and 4 like you planned. Run the speakers on a hpf and the subs on a lpf. Set your gains with a dmm and call it a day.
