Tranny Change

generally, what is the easiest way to drop the tranny on a 2.4?
anyone know? i'm thinking if i take off the crossmember in the front, disconnect the drive axles, and unbolt from the engine it should come straight out. any reason why it shouldn't? i need to get this done over christmas break.
any help would be appreciated.

any service manual or anything would be great.

I can give some insight but it's more for a 3400 stand point:

The motor will have to be supported as the enitre rack and engine frame are dropped out, the axles and wheels will both have to be removed, and the tranny can be dropped out after that.

I wouldn't suggest doing it yourself, unless you have a cherry picker, and an aliment system in your garage, and about $5k in tools

yeah, i have a fully stocked garage with cherry picker, tranny jacks, you name it. as far as an alignment machine goes, please specify why i would need one. i mean, can't i just take it to get aligned after i finish?

raise vehicle, remove both axles, use overhead motor mount, remove bolts from tranny, remove crossmember, remove bolt from torque convertor, use pry bar to pry tranny from engine, lower tranny to ground, go to hardware store and see if they can get the guide pins round again. Go to World Wide request a tranny rebuild kit. then get piss looking for preformance tranny parts, cuz it's non-existance.

That's about the easiest way to explain it. If you have a full service rack it take about 2 hours to R/R. If you have stand jack and friend it takes about 8 hours to R/R the tranny.

all i know is out the bottom and it's a female dog.

remove wirign harness from engine and tranny.... move it to the side...

disconnect all the sensors and crap, remove the fuel rail put it to the side.. same with power steering..

some other knick knacks..

cherry pick the goddamn engine and tranny out at the same time...

some other steps are missing, but that's one way to do it.

The easiest way to do it is to drop it out the bottom at a full service shop. If you are doing it at home you can pull the engine tranny together but its a "female dog". You need an alignment machine (or a shop very close) b/c you have to pull the suspension apart to get the axles out.

Disconnect axles,wiring etc. raise up the front end high & with the motor supported by Cherrypicker,brace etc. from the top...unbolt the cradle & drop the whole assembly(engine & trans.) from the bottom.

Bah, it's not that hard. I did it with jackstands and a floor jack, no problem. That was a J-body, but it's not that different.
