Unwanted Amp Noise

Alright here it is. I installed the 500/1 and 2 12"W3s they sound good at moderate volume, but when I crank it, it makes this loud popping/crackling noise when the bass hits. It seems to only do it on the reaaly punchy bass notes and not the low deep rich sounding bass. help.

I would think it is either your subs cant handle the power or the amp isnt good enough to push the subs at max volume.

Bad speaker wires? or to thin of a gauge?

maybe a bad ground

Sounds like the subs are Bottem'n out, the enclosure may be slightly too large for the driver, allowing too much cone travel. is the amp clipping? Have you tryed turning down the gain?

Sounds to me like you have your gains to high and it's clipping. Are the speakers new?

I got the speakers used and from what I thought in excellent shape. the only way it doesnt do it is if the gain is almost all the way down. then it doesnt have the boom I got this set up for. the boxes me and my buddy have are very similar in sizeso i dont think its that. the sound fine until a really punchy bass note hits and then it sounds distorted.

Sounds to me like they have a bad coil. Did you listen to them before you bought them? If it's making a scratching sound like a metal scraping on metal odds are the coils are blown.

How can you tell if a coil is blown. are they expensive to replace?

Push down on the cone of the sub. Or pull up if you can get to the back of it. If it makes the same sound as it does while it's playing most likely it's blwn. Be careful though because you could put a dent in the dust cover.

When you say that they sound alright at lower volumes, how low do you mean? A blown coil will sound bad at nearly all volumes. The difference with low volumes being that you may not notice it over your mid and tweets. Lower the volume and listen to the sub directly. Try to tell if it is coming from one or the other. I kind of agree with blk03, it sounds as though you may be bottoming out the voice coils. At higher decibles or lower frequencies than what a sub can handle the cone will bottom out onto the voice coil. It can have a wierd drawn out distortion. Not realy a crackling though. Try to describe the sound to the best of your ability. As for your gain, exactly how high do you have it? I have to run my gain at one quarter turn due to the high voltage of the HU. In honesty, the goal of a good setup is to have your gains turned as low as possible. It can be harder to tell by ear if you have them up too high. with mids and highs a whining will tend to be heard along with scrathy distorted highs. With a sub the lower notes that draw more power will carry a very distorted crunchy sound to it. This distortion may only be apparent when the volume is turned up increasing the HU's output voltage.
The issue of cable gauge and grounding can have a impact as well. As stated previously, check your ground and ensure it is efficient. No paint around the bolts, and use as large of a bolt as possible. I use a grounding block to ensure as much contact as possible.
List your exacty HU and specs. Does it have sub volume control? What is the voltage? List your gain settings and how you set them. I must have been mistaken because I believed the 500/1 had auto gains. What size of wires are on you amp and going to the subs? What ohm are your subs and are they dual voice coil? How do you have the subs wired. Don't just say series or parallel. Let us know exactly. We will get it figured out soon enough with alittle help.
If your buddy has the same subs, try hooking them to your amp. Ensure they are wired the same and do not adjust the gains. We want to rule out this as a issue.

I forgot to ask if you had the bass boost on and what crossover slopes you were using. The subs may be hitting frequencies they were not designed to handle.

OK here goes, the noise only hapens on the really hard punchy bass notes, the really low deep bass tones dont seem to do it. It sounds like a load popping crackling noise only when it hits hard. My gains are set to maybe 1/4 turn or less. the ground has a good contact and 4 gauge wire same as my power wire.My head unit is a JVC KD-sh9750, exactly sure what kind of info you want on it though. The line out level is 4V/20kohm load(fullscale).Output impeance is 1Kohm. It also has sub control. I have 16 gauge wires going to the subs. the subs are 4ohm andthey are dual voice coil. hope this helps

I dont know what mikegett will tell you, but he recomended I use atleat 12 gauge speaker wire he told me 10 or 8 gauge would be better, but that was for DVC Eclipes subs.

If someone could give me a quik description or maybe even a diagram of how to hook up these subs I would really appreciate it. (dont laugh) I think I might have them hooked up incorrectly. I have looked on the jl website and it shows different ways butr my buddys isnt hooked up like any of them and now im confused.
