I'm at 102k. Only thing I need is struts right now, aside from the good ole tune up. Replace the water pump, keep the olds. They don't call talon's DSMs for no reason...

My thoughts exactly...
I mean I had cars before where I replaced the distributor, fan shrouds, ignitions...its a car...not a chair with wheels...it will break down...
I mean $5000 or a new water pump...ouch

Water pump is only about $25... I think mine was just slightly less, but got some anti-seeze stuff for the bolts and some sealant stuff for the pump. Came out around $25... Installed it within an hour with a little help from my dad to get the belt tightened back. Although I think I now need to get my tensioner thing fixed.... It makes a rattling noise now.

Just replace the water pump! I'm getting my car fixed and I blew a headgasket (@ 58000 miles), I probably wouldn't have if I still didn't owe $1500. But what are you going to do all cars break.

Its a cheap repair, just do it and move on..now if it was something expensive like a tranny, you may want to consider your options...but this isn't bad

DO NOT BUY A DSM if your looking for a reliable car, dsm's are NOT reliable, plus the more you do to them the more they are going to break. just start talking to people who own them, they are always working on them. dont get me wrong if your looking for a universal car that makes cheap horsepower then dsm's are the car, now i know what your thinking i dont own a alero so i cant tell you that the alero is a reliable car. but i do know from experience that dsm's will break down if they arnt completely stock with low miles.

Yeah water pumps are easy, but messy if you don't drain the coolant first

hey guys your right im keeping the olds lol i did a lil research and the talons arent reliable, but on another note i got a question, when i drive over bumps and potholes my car does like a clunk bump noise which seems to be coming from under my seat i got out of the car and look and didnt see anything loose or broken and the passenger seat feels very loose any ideas on what it could be?

Most likely upper strut mounts/bearings. Mine do it too...I'll fix it when I get a set of shocks and lowering springs. Try this though....don't drive through potholes

you say your Alero is hitting 90k miles, I really gotta wonder though, how many miles on that '92 Talon? Lets forget that the 4-banger DSM's are disposable engines. I've had 3 mopar products that have had DSM motors in them, and I've had bad problems with all 3, and that's why I'm here with GM.

lol just to make a statement. I'd fix the Alero. Seriously though, DSM's are SHIT. As much as I slag GM they're a god send compared to DSM.
As for buying a car from a mechanic make sure it's someone you trust, my buddy bought a Buick from his mechanic and it was an awesome car till it got written off. Then again I've had friends where it's gone the exact opposite.

Their transmissions are usually the weak point.
