Alerogirl,
The reason they say its not a good idea to go from conventional to synthetic at high mileage is because it tends to clean the gunk that have incaked the seals over time. What this means for you, is after a short period of time, you may develope an oil leak through those seals.

lol, i must say that my one friend has a 2004 Chevrolet Venture with the 3400 and all he runs in it is Super Tech oil and oil filter from walmart and it seems to be fine. Van is at 178,000 and it runs like new.

It was most definitely 8 quarts to do the XLR.. And probably the same for the STS-V.

Question for y'all. I have 270,000Km on my 3400 Alero. I am pretty sure it's used good old dinosaur oil its entire life. Would it be bad to switch to straight synthetic now? Car runs fine and I have no problems. I am due for an oil change, and wonder if this is a good idea, and if it will do any good, or damage??

There shouldn't be any ill affects from switching to synthetic aside from possibly some gunk being removed that's sealing a leak or two, but I doubt even that.
What you will gain this time of the year is some better cold starting because the oil flows better, especially if it gets really cold up in your area.

Doesn't get THAT cold, Maybe sometime about minus 40 celcius, but usually hovers between -20celcius, and minus 30 celcius. Nice warm winter weather.
Thanks for the tip
