What is this thing?

So i was doing the whole *listen to what rattles* and i peeled back the "carpet" in the trunk on the passenger side and saw the thing in the picture below. it has rubber flaps that seem to be going to the outside. the rubber makes quite a bit of noise when the subs play. so my question is..

1. what is it
2. what does it do/do i need it

edit: not the wire thing, but the rectangle shaped thing

yep. keeps your trunk from being air tight.... which would be bad.

also probably helps drain it, if it was to fill w/ water.... but thats terribly unlikely to happen.

It's called a pressure relief valve, and it's doing exactly what it's supposed to do. When the subs create pressure moving air in your trunk, the flaps open/close. Yes, you need it and no you shouldn't remove the flaps, as everyone else has said. I don't know about the whole bug thing, but who wants small mexican families and frisbees in your trunk??

why would you want to remove the flaps? Its not like you see the vent all the time, its hidden under the carpet doing its job.

Heres your "mod" list

Black rims, flaps taken off vent from trunk...... BAD ASS
