seprate battery

so i've been thinking about installing a carputer in my car. i have a 120amp battery isolator. What i'm thinking is purchasing a battery and putting it in the rear. have the carputer connected to it. I'm also going to run all my stereo equipment off it. that way i can run the stereo without the car running and not worry about a dead battery. The deck will still be connected the same way to the front battery.

Is this a good idea or a bad one?

Sounds like a pretty good idea although I'd run power to the Head Unit from the battery also, no point in having a HU that runs when the amps are gone. Still use the factory power to signal the HU to turn on/off.

Only thing to watch for is good grounding everywhere to prevent any power drops/backfeeding.

great idea i used to have 3 extra batteries im just running 2 now, i'de be sure to put a 150-200 amp fuse at both ends of your power runs within 18" of the battery just so if anything shorts through the wire your protecting all batteries, then just put a good chasis ground in. look at my build logs and i have pictures of where i grounded mine, great fuse blocks for the money are x-scorpions there exactly like the 50 dollar rockofrds but i think u can get them with fuse for less that $15.

Possibly a bad idea.

Depends on the battery.

Depends on the amplifier being used.

i would just be getting a regular car battery that has a large standby time. maybe a redtop or something in the future.

What should i look out for?

you should have an AMG or dry cell battery, standard batteries are vented, IE allowing toxic crap to leak at times, i had a nautilus that did that

If you use a standard battery you will have to vent it to the outside with tubing. So you must get a battery with this feature.

Red tops arent meant for secondary audio based batteries. yellow tops are. However I would look into a Kinetic battery first.

Sounds like a good idea if you are not wanting to run down the front battery.

Like Ryan said, look into a Kinetic battery. I have tried every other brand, and ended up being a dealer for kinetic. Best batteries for the price.

so if i got a kinetic battery it wouldn't need to be vented? then this would seem like a pretty good idea? I actually have alot of plans for electronic stuff in my car. and i want to leave the car battery for the car so i can always start it. I'm getting tired of pushing it and popping the clutch to start it when the battery is dead

You can pick up a nice little portable starter if you really need to. I have one I keep in the garage, you can set it to either charge the battery or to give it enough to start and charge itself.

ya. but i dont want to strain the battery to much. also seems like yellowtops are a good idea too. i mostly dont want to have to worry about venting it. it would be secured in the trunk

How often do you listen to the radio with your car off?

The kinetics are sealed batteries so they will not need to be vented. The yellow tops suck for the price.

Sounds like you need to replace your front battery also

Yes, by sackcloth belt, is taken off right now.

With caps? nothing, one is for woofer amp, second for sub amp, amplifiers has additional connectors for caps.
