5w-40 diesel synthetic
ive seen alot of info about using 5w-40 diesel synthetic motor oil especially shell rotella T in cars. alot of reaserch says its not only safe but extremely beneficial and perfectly safe to use. i worked with a mechanic at valvoline who swore by it said hes been doing it for years. whats the deal with that? any opinions? anyone tried it?

I don't see why it would hurt anything, but then again, I don't see why it would be beneficial if your Mobil 1, Castrol, etc. synthetic motor oil will do the job just fine.
Diesel oil is designed to be used in engines that see constant RPMs for a long period of time. I'd say if you did a lot of highway driving, it would maybe be better at reducing wear, but I don't know if it would be a measureable difference.
My dad uses it in our family's boat. He did some research and found that it was reccomended to use it because boat engines also see constant RPMs for long periods of time, since there are no gears to shift.

It is great for your engine... The downside is that it absolutely destroys your emissions. The whole reason normal oil does not contain the heavy metal additives is for emissions reasons, and once you start using that oil in your car, your catalytic converter will be ruined very quickly.

40 weight oil is a little thick - your fuel economy will go down.

oil being burned means bigger problems... and a thicker oil should sneak past seals to get burned less readily.

I don't smoke anything sir. Thats what decades of research done by other people says. And unless you are going to do decades of research yourself, I'm going to believe the research done by other people. Did you think that there could be some magical reason why all oil doesn't contain what diesel oil does?

All that research still didn't tell me how my cat will be ruined.

Do the research yourself then and find out. Heavy metals ruin emissions. End of story.

Where in your research does it say that a 4 stroke gasoline burning engine should normally burn it's own engine oil? On a healthy engine, the oil does nothing to emissions or the cat.
