depends on what you've previously owned. if i try to say my alero is quick, after test driving my dad's vette.... then yea, my brain kicks itself.
but alot of the drivers on site are first time car owners. (aleros aren't exactly high price point) so it will seem really quick.

my car lineup went as follows... 97 mustang convertible with a tiny beat down 4 banger. then was a 1.8L 1996 ford escort LX... then my 01' alero 2.4. when i first got the ho... it was fast to me... 2.4 DOHC>>>>1.8 escort. now that i got my 07' WRX... the ho is not even close to fast... and i know from being exposed to a different crowd.. my WRX isn't really that fast... so that makes the ho even slower. so yeah... comparing it to any other baseline cars about the same cash value... the alero isn't a dog... but it's just not a fast car... if it were... a lot of us wouldnt be on an alero forum

Well, what engine is in ur Alero and what was in ur GT, like if the GT was 3400, and ur Alero is a 2.2L then it wont be as quick. To me, its quick 'cuz my first car was a '97 Saturn SL2 with a 1.7L Twin Cam. My Alero is double that with a 3400, so it seems tons faster.

both 3400 both similar mileage exept gt was 99 as to alero 04 and my car before this alero was same saturn which would easily off the line take my alero.

I have been driving my 2.2 liter S-10 all winter which is ridiculously dead, and took my alero out of storage last weekend the car feels like a freakin rocket compared to the dime. Now I can actually step on the gas and pass people instead of having to get like an 1/8th mile run!

Well what exactly is fast to you?
I can beat a V8 Mustang convertible (IDK about the new ones, I'm talking about upto 04 or 05 before that retro style one came out, because I never raced one) and I can keep up with the GT coupes and usually be less than a car lenght behind. The most I lost to a 2002 GT Mustang Coupe was my front wheel was even with his rear wheel. Both our r/t's were in the same area.
The convertibles run 15.15 in the 1/4 mile and my best time is 14.53. I usually avg in the low 15's high 14's prending on track conditions and weather, but that will effect every car. With good condtions, my Alero can put up a hell of a fight with the WRX's and such, since they run between 14.8 and 14.3 stock
Is 14.53 fast? Personally, no I don't think it is, but for a 3300 lb NA V6 motor car that runs high 15's low 16's in stock form, then yes it is. In the same case, is 15's fast, is 13's fast, is 12's fast? If you want you're Alero to run 12's or faster, better think about putting up a lot more money than the car is worth, but if that's what you want to do, then go for it.
Between parts, labor, and trial and error, I have around $5,000 to $6,000 in my motor, can I get it faster, yes, do I want to, not with this motor. In the future I'm getting a new 3400 bottom end right from GM, putting on all my stuff, plus a set of heads and a cam, and then I'll probably be running in the 13's easily

Man, you give your dad's old 'vette way too much credit, It would've hit low 14s on a good day when it was new.

I can stay right next to the new GTs and blow by all of the old GTs. ($2500 into engine, incl. complete engine with all forged internals/gaskets/bearings not installed yet and future power increases)

yeah but it launches like a beast. saying a car is "quick" or "fast" to me, is all in its accel.
its probably mostly because its rwd, but it definitely pushes me back into my seat more then my alero ever has.

Really i dont thnk aleros and grand ams were ever intended to be "fast cars" Yes they can be quick, Redog, Ion, Spyhunter, Blackjack, jakal, all them. They are fast but speed comes with a price. Ion says he is spending about 2500 on all his mods, to run in the 13's right? Thats reasonable if you want to spend that. Its all in how much money you have.
Ive always seen our cars as nice cruisers, not speed demons. We can still hold our ground when need be but in most cases are cars are best for being clean and good looking with some tasteful mods.

Im all about cruising, I admit the alero's with the 3.4 arent going to win you a speed records of course, but its enough to get out of its way.
Like people said, speed takes money, and if your willing to dump the money into it for that speed then youll have a fast alero, if not, just cruise low and slow....lol
