D576 Coils

Does anyone use these in the 3400? I've been doing a bit of reading and they seem to be an alternative to the MSD 8224s.. These coils in particular come from the L67 3800 Supercharged engines. A lot of guys say that these are better than the MSD coils while others say MSD is better. I've read that using them on the 3400 does show some sort of performance improvement, but I'm still not sure how credible these sources are.

My coils are 12 years old now and I haven't had any issues but I thought I'd go with the upgrade anyways and see how it serves me. I'm just looking for any input from anyone else who have used these or know anything else about them.

Does not apply. These would be an upgrade not a direct replacement. Just trying to figure out what if any benefits these would give.

Also just because CEL and SVS lights don't come on doesn't mean things don't need to be serviced every so often. I found this out after changing my O2 sensor even though no code was thrown, my gas mileage showed an improvement of 3-4 mpg without changing my driving habits. Preventative maintenance may seem like a waste of money to some, but I prefer this route than to wait for something happen down the road.

Well what I believe is the D555 (stock) is used in lower performance applications and produce a less powerful while the D576(L67 3800 Supercharged) is for higher performance applications and produces a more powerful spark. This is my understanding.

so, you got some data? like amperage, spark duration - something that would easily clarify this discussion as an upgrade or not.

Not really.. I'm not sure if datasheets for stuff like this are readily available. Specs like those way too technical for what I'm trying to find out.

I can't find the thread I was reading on 60degreev6.com but they were talking about the different coil packs available and the fact that all gm 60 degree engines used basically the same coil pack. They also stated that unless the coil somehow wasn't burning all the fuel then there wasn't any way you could increase performance by changing out the stock pieces. Almost every post on there about coilpacks results in the person going back to stock.

I bought the D576 for $23 each of Amazon a few hours ago.. $17 shipped for 3. I bought the last 3 from the cheapest seller .. I did a search on here and GrandAmGt.com and I couldn't find a lot on this topic.

I've actually read and heard from a few mech, that the MSD coils as an upgrade on a GM engine is a waste of money. In most cases, GM ignitions are the same if not slightly better than it's aftermarket conterpart.

However the MSD does add one benifit over stock. The "WOW" factor you get from your friends when you pop the hood.

This goes back to the 1970's when GM ditched the points and started with HEI

Ugh after waiting for a while for a whole month for them to come, there was a complication in delivery and the seller just refunded my money. I was going to pay $23 each now I'd have to pay $40ish each.

I've put this on the back burner for now because I still have to get a custom exhaust fabbed and installed which is just more important at the moment.. Sorry Mike!

Also Paul, I've read one of your earlier posts and that was kinda the reason I wanted the GM coils over the MSDs

yea... I wasted money on my MSD's might be better off going with GM's instead. I really haven't noticed a difference between stock coils and MSD coils.

Pretty sure the grand prix is a 90° v6 though.... Just sayin....

Stock ignition is plenty good unless your hitting high hp numbers.. Id guess the stock coils are good for 500 whp
