winter maintenance

So since its time to change my oil I wonder what's the best oil to use for winter, temps in the low 20's to about 17 at the moment, also I plan to change my spark plugs what would help or make a difference in colder temps ? Thanks

5w30 is recommended for cooler temperatures. If you want to thin it out a little more, you could substitute up to 20% of the motor oil with Marvel Mystery Oil. Mmo thins the oil but also helps clean the engine. All of the mechanics at my job swear by mmo for both their personal vehicles and work trucks.
Works good for motorcycles too.

I wouldn't do additives. Dropping the oil viscosity is as easy as using 0w30 or even 0w20 (what the euro cars use).... HOWEVER know that when you thin out the oil, you also DROP the OIL PRESSURE. Thinner oil simply will clear the engine's oil passages faster which would in turn circulate faster. This would just make it so the internals like the bearings wear out faster.

I would just stick to 5w30. It's rated for winter. The 5W stands for winter rating. In the winter, moreso when the engine is cold, it's a 5 weight oil. You're in Georgia anyways. Georgia has an easier winter than say Wisconsin or Michigan where it drops to or near 0F.

It's been dropping to 25 here in DC and my Camaro still has 10w30. The engine was built for that specific oil weight. I'm not having issues with it. I'll probably start having issues with it if I go to Maine or something.

5W-30 is fine. I am originally from Minnesota where temps can reach -60 or lower. Cars always ran fine on that weight oil. Hell I had an old 92 mercury topaz that started at -65*F with 10w-40 in the crankcase. Although it did have 300,000-400,000 miles on it.

Just make sure your coolant is good. And just run 5w30.

X2. I know the 4 bangers and I think the 3400 is already supposed to be using 5w30. Coolant is important as well. Check it to make sure its good for low temperatures so as not to freeze your radiator and hoses, cause well, thats just bad. Since I dont know the history of mine at all, Im dumping and refilling the whole system myself. Check your tires, need good tread and pressure will drop a few pounds with the cold. Brakes, and your heater and defroster work. Redog wrote a great how-to for fixing that on here. (the rear window defroster) and keep up regular maintenance.
