Open exaust.

Well I'm getting closer to having everything in order, but I ran into a problem with finding an exaust shop that doesnt want to charge upwards of $300 to run 2.5" piping. So...I was wondering what you guys would think about running an electric cutout right after the header. Good idea, bad idea?

Yes I know it would be obnoxiously loud when open.

Don't do it. I had it happen by accident with aftermarket headers. You will grow tired of it after a few days, I did and it was only a few miles. My car is fairly loud with a full exhaust, but open headers was just dumb.

No no, if you read the post you'll see I'm not running full time open. Just an electric cutout for when I'm at the strip, auto-x, or just effing around in general. When closed I'll just have the stock setup. I'm just wondering if there's anything detrimental to running an open system on this motor.

$300 for a full exhaust isn't bad. Personally, I would do a full exhaust, but a cutout wouldn't be bad. You get the extra flow at the drag strip, and a quiet exhaust to drive to and from the track. There's nothing detrimental about an open exhaust besides the sound and smell (no cat).

It's REALLY effing loud. I'll take a video once I fix my oil leak of what my car sounds with open dump wastegate, sounds the same as when my downpipe was disconnected..

Open exhaust isn't going to help on a motor any smaller that a 5 liter V8. It will actually hurt performance

My car is proof of that, I have the LD9 and I'm pretty sure my Header is rusted out. Though I can't find the hole.

Since then, Mileage and Power have been horrid.

Bad idea. $300 isn't that much for custom exhaust - I paid close to $1000 for mine (but that's how you get ripped off when it says MINI/BMW/JCW on it).

Yeah and that was just pipes, and not even stainless or mandrel bent at that. I'd be supplying the muffler, tips, ect.

Reddog: As far as losing power I'm assuming you're referring to the drop in backpressure, but when running boost is there anything such as too low backpressure?

There is no such thing as too little backpressure if you're boosted. It'll just sound like ass. And you want to hear whoosh and whine, not ass.

Allow me to answer this. Performance suffers because you will lose tremendous exhaust gas velocity. Whether you are boosted or not, you want as little backpressure as possible with as much velocity as possible. They work against each other, so you'll need to find a happy medium.
