man i'm all for you doing a motor swap in an alero. i get so much crap here in memphis for mine from all the rice burners and "import racers". if you need any help with any thing a guy i work with knows a whole lot about that stuff. he has probably the fastest tahoe i have ever seen and he is about to do a motor swap in his. he can give you some good advice on that northstar and ls1 if you plan on doing that. well anyways good luck and keep us posted.

a/p shop class, woohoo, no offence but that doesnt sound too promising, its not like you can just take the old one out and drop the new one in, there is alot more to it than that, alot more then most people know how to do, so im not saying its impossible or you're wrong, but dont get your hopes up

I'm getting a lot of negative vibes from you on this subject lol I've always wanted a northstar in my car, but it will be cheaper to sell it and get a BMW lol so I ditched the northstart plan, hope you get it going!!

Hell yeah, 4T80E, that's a sweet gear box. The 4T45E is an exact copy only smaller, and without scavange pumps for the dry sump, and a few missing accuums, as well as only one valve body, where the T80 has 2.

I already have the enginge and the trans out of a crashed caddy, some grandma was driving too slow and wham! Got a buddy who will do the work for free with his a/p shop class. All for the cost of parts! pics to come soon?!?
|
yeah... he will do it for free till he sees the amount of work involved.
it is possible and gm has done it but its not easy or cheap
you will need waaaaaay more than just the engine from the caddy too

Really Crazy Idea but you could always try calling GM they may have the interest to help you wedge the Northstar Motor in a Alero.

i wasnt trying to be a jerk about it, im sorry, i was just stating that alot of people have had the same idea and have all said the same thing and nothing has hsown up from all of them, once they see how much work is involved that not many know how to do they just scrap the idea

will the northstar even fit? that thing looked crammed in my aurora. it is afterall one of the biggest v8's gm's making, bigger than the ls1.
unless your talking about a 95 (obdI) they havn't even figured out the computer, so your looking at a stand alone computer, another grand++
i saw a northstar swap in a 1990 oldsmobile toronado trofeo, but they have a little bigger engine bay

the alero actually has more room between the strut towers than the intrigue and they put a northstar in an intrigue.
also the 3.5L that was in the osv takes up just as much or more room than the northstar
the accessories bolt directly to the block on the northstar but stick out front on the 3.5
as mentioned before it has been done by gm
stand alone would be the best way but I'm not sure where you are going to find a stand alone for arround a grand
the one I got for my V6 was around 2500 with a few extras.

see it fits fine in an Alero.
this is actually a 4.6 475hp northstar that was in the Alero 442, according to the Special Vechile Manager.

Yeah, I'm also going to be pessimistic about this. There have been many that have come onto this site and said they were going to drop a 350 or a Northstar or a Shortstar into their Alero. I have yet to see it happen and I've been on this site for two years. If you do try it, good luck, but I just don't think it would be worth the money. Just build up the internals with parts from Mantapart and put a high boost turbo or supercharger on it. Putting a motor like that in the Alero would upset the balance, among other things.
