Trying to turn the key and it shuts off completly

Welllllllllllllllllllllllll, after a few tries at the lim job i finally got it put back together and everything how i wanted to replace and fix i fixed. but now today i went to turn it on and when i put the key in on off it turns the dash lights on and when it goes to acc it does the same but when i turn it to ON or try to turn it over its like the battery just turns off... any ideas? fuse? wiring? Computer? i double checked everything but have no idea what it is.

so, when you turn the key to the crank positions everything shuts off but when you let it come back to on its fine? sounds like a dead battery to me to cover the basic DUH solution.

but i'm gonna say you already checked that. then i dunno, i've seen it happen before but dnt remember what it was besides batt.

ya i thought it might be the battery too but i charged it and still didnt work, maybe a fuse or lose wire somewhere?
but to be more specific it when i turn it to ACC it seems like everything is fine but if i turn it to on or try and turn it over it just goes dead.

Turn the key to ACC, turn the headlights on and see if the display dies.

Yes? Either the battery has no capacity left or there is a loose or corroded wire.

No? Possibly the ignition switch is defective.

Yea, I agree with the ignition switch.. might just be an unlucky deal where both went out at the same time.

I'd pop off the panel on the column and take a look.. should see 12v on the acc wire when you turn to acc, and then 12v when ya turn to run, too. Also look for 12v on the run wire. IIRC that's how it works.

If the voltage goes away, it's the ign switch.

If the voltage stays, but nothing powers up, then you've got something wrong somewhere out there that powers up with the run circuit. Oh boy.

There is a 89.7% chance that it is a loose connection at the battery. the bolt can be fully tightened but the connection plate gets worn and is not fully mating with the terminal,(prob the neg. ) I picked up a washer and some dielectric grease haven't had the problem since.

I had the EXACT SAME problem with my previous vehicle. It read over 12 volts on a meter, but as soon as more than a few amps of load where put on it, it went dead. had it tested, and it was confirmed that it couldn't handle a load.

look at it this way, you have a brand new, fully charged battery. I would try the ignition switch thing now.... If that doesn't work, have fun.....

After you try to start it and the power shuts off, does it come back on right away after you turn the key back or do you have to wait a bit for it to retore??

security light blinking?

I had a similar issue and the red security light was blinking. Its Worth a try even if it isn't blinking..

Turn the key to acc and leave it alone for no less than 15 min. Then take the key out, count to 10 and try to start the car normally.

Good luck

Any results on this?

I'm having a very similar problem.

Last few weeks it was intermittent now almost every time I start the car.

Car starts, runs, and is drivable,

I’ve driven a few feet to a few miles, and then everything comes back on. Inop gauge cluster, no radio, no HVAC, no auto lights, no locks, no windows; everything inside the car is dead. After everything comes on its like nothing was wrong, only today did the SES come on and stay on (not blinking). In the ACC position guage cluster boots, and the radio windows and locks work.

I figured it was either the ignition switch or the BCM. Have removed it and removed the connectors on the right side of the dash fuse panel and reconnected made sure all the pins were seated.

What’s the 12 volt circuit in the steering column that clutch1 referred to earlier in this forum?

Fixed it today; replaced the electrical part of the ignition switch.

The lock cylinder was fine and verified there were no passlock codes. I pulled apart the old ignition switch, 3 of the 5 contacts in the switch had carbon trace burns on the contact face.

They obviously been eaten away from electrical arc each time the switch was opened and closed. So oh well, 9 year old car some things are bound to wear out. But crazy stuff being able to drive and have nothing inside the car working because of it.

However toward the end of it getting really bad, it set O2 heater code, cruise inhibit code, body module code, but after replacement and driving, the codes have not reposted. Nothing has failed to operate correctly.

This happened on our Grand Cherokee. Let it sit for an hour or over night and it would fire back up. Took it to the dealer they reprogrammed the computer 2, Ingition, and even put a new computer in. Finally they got sick of seeing the Jeep in every other week so they gave us a 65th edition

white04alero has a little shameless behaviour in the past
when this happened to me, it was a loose connection at the battery. i just didnt tighten them up enough when i installed the battery, and after time, they got looser. so i went in and tightened the nuts on the terminals down and all my problems were solved.
