thought that was made illegal?

HIDs w/o projectors cannot be sold... but if a projector is present then its legal.. at least.. thats what i took from that whole mess that occurred.

how can manufacturers get away with it, but civilians can't?

Projectors and HIDs have no direct correlation each other.

The legality of it is what is certified by the DOT. Using any light source not certified by the DOT is illegal. Not because it will cause bad results, just because it's not certified and *may* have bad results.

Even if you have a vehicle with stock projectors but with a halogen light source, installing a HID kit is illegal. The lamp type is required to be marked on the headlamp assembly itself.

HIDs in halogen housings are illegal. It's perfectly legal for manufacturers to put HIDs in reflector housings because those housings were designed to handle the amount of light HIDs put out.

When you take a housing designed for a halogen bulb and then throw in a HID bulb that's 3 times as bright, that's where you start having problems with glare, hot spots, etc.

Same thing with projectors, as Cliff mentioned. Projectors designed for halogens aren't meant to deal with the light output of HIDs.

I don't know if you've ever seen the different style bulbs for different housings. The D2S HID bulb is for a projector housing, since the projector has it's own cut-off shield inside of it.

The D2R bulb is for a reflector housing, and has a small cut-off shield on the bulb itself.

Got to ask a stupid noob question to get the terms right.

With PROJECTOR you mean these headlights that look like a fish eye?
In comparison to OUR stock REFLECTOR headlights.

AND I have to use D2R bulbs to keep my stock cut-off line of light. Right?

This is quit important for me cause I have to pass german TÜV.
And HID's aren't allowed as long as you don't have Automatic alignment and washing unit in front.

But don't care, Alero's are so rare that it just have to look stock so nobody gets suspicious.

I'm a trained car mechanic so I know to align them properly so that I'm not a hazard to others.

So pleeeeeeaaaase help me

Yours
Julian

1st Q- yes you are right
2nd q- apparently from the post above yes. but i seem to have the D2S style bulb and have yet to get flashed by anybody surprisingly.

btw, i hid my ballasts (i have 4 lol) behind the front bumper piece where the logo is. When you take out the headlights there is plenty of room to get the stuff back in there and stuck down and hide wires. opening my hood i look 100% stock.
