Exclamation Keep your headers from rusting

Learned a nice little trick yesterday at the track from one of the other long-time racers, which he in turn learned from Tom Vandergriff (whose family owns one of the Header companies - Hedman Header, maybe?). He didn't want to spend the extra money to buy coated ceramic headers and was given this little tidbit. This trick will keep your headers looking good when you have to store your car away for any length of time (like for a week or 3 at a time between race days).

Make a 50/50 mix of Kerosene and Tranny Fluid and put it in a spray bottle. Lightly mist your entire headers right before storing your car away.

When you start the car up the next time, she'll smoke like a banshee as the mixture burns off but the headers will stay nice and clean.

One of the guys at my track does it on his mint-condition early-60's Plymouth that he trailers to the track every weekend. Keeps his headers nice and clean without damaging anything. He's the one who told me about it when I remarked about his car smoking when he fired it up Wednesday afternoon @ the Jet Car Nats. After a few minutes the smoke stopped as the last of the mixture evaporated.

I just wish I knew about this back when I had my old Camaro racecar. Non-coated headers rust like a bitch.
