ok, personally i'm too cheap to buy an ipod. (or have 20Gb of music to put on one, i'll stick with my minidisc player and cd's) but i got a friend who has an eclipse and just got his wifey a mini ipod for xmas. i'm trying to talk him into getting a headunit for the car. (preferably a pioneer, panasonic, etc) <-- good but not $$$ as hell....

but the headunit has to have an optional ipod attatchment cord. i searched around the site, but it doesn't seem many people are talking about it, but i know its possibe...

soo... have at it.

Most aftermarket headunits will offer an auxillary input, most are in the back of the headunit, only some like Aiwa's at Best Buy have front inputs. Otherwise, some alpine headunits are compatible with an ipod interface ($100) with which you can control the ipod through the headunit controls, pretty sweet if you ask me, but more pricey. As far as the cord itself, I think its a pretty simple cord you can get at best buy for pretty cheap. Either way, using an aux input will give you much better sound quality than any fm modulator ever will. Hope this helps.

that would work but i'm not looking to connect it with an Aux input. some newer types have an attachment for the ipod directly. (charges and plays) BMW's have the option to come stock, but i'm looking for an aftermarket....

I believe that Alpine is the only company that is interfacing with the Ipod. They manufacture the BMW HU. I am sure that others will be out soon enough. The main reason that it is taking so long is the complexity of the Ipod interface. It docs, charges, and communicates with the periferals all through the same port. There are some HU's that are having difficulty using a aux input for this reason. Most aux ports only except up to 1 volt. The ipod uses a five volt interface and will cause alot of noise. Newer HU's are increasing the input to this range.

I saw at Best Buy the other day a Little FM Modulator thingy that sends a FM signal from your ipod to your radio, might be worth looking into.

Here's one for factory radios
http://www.usaspec.com/ipod.htm

Crutchfield is carrying these, I couldn't find them on their website yet. But they are listed in the latest catalog I got from them yesterday. Priced at $119.99

My friend had an ipod with his stock headunit and an FM transmitter, it sounded like poop so he hooked it up with an FM modulator which sounded less poopy but still poop. Then the other day he hacked up his radio and basically disconnected the signal wires from his casette deck and put RCA jacks on them to make an aux-in. ghetto rigged as hell but it sounds incredible compared to what he had

ok, first of all FM transmitters are garbage.

and pioneer has a control box for the DEH-PM8P. it allows you to completely control the ipod (not just play what you select on the ipod by hand) and charge the ipod.
