I just picked up a Pioneer DEH-P7600MP for dirt cheap. I wanted to remove the factory deck and put this HU in without using a Metra VT-GMRC-01 module. I'll get the wiring harness adpater so I don't have to chop the factory adapter. I need to know if there is anything else besides losing door chimes when I remove the the factory stereo. I don't want to wait for one to come in, and all the local shops want around $160 for one, they tried telling me that my air bags wont work if I remove the factory deck. I guess I'm looking to shed some light on this and find some answers, not ones from pushy salesmen. By the way my car is a 2001 Alero w/ AT if that matters.

check the how to topic by purple and black. i have the same deck and it works fine for me. I had to get the wire harness and i got a pc speaker that i put in the center console(kinda tucked in the side, near to the shift mechanism) instead of wiring it back up to the stereo speaker.
good luck. its a royal PITA the first time you do it, but i'm done and redone mine a few times so its really easy now.
and just an fyi... the 7600 OWNS! i love it.

There are alot of myths as to what will be affected by removing the HU. To date, I haven't heard of a single person affecting the airbag by removing the HU. The two common issues were chimes and in some earliere models like 2001, a check engine light will stay on.
Not all alero models will be affected by the HU. Some models have a network running through the HU. The easiest way to check your car, is by unplugging the HU. Turn on the ignition. If a diagnostic light does not come on (like the airbag) then it has been disabled. Otherwise, I would suggest calling a GM dealer and getting the facts on your particular model.

i think for chimes, if you open your door(w/ keys in) if chimes come from just the left door, you need the harness.. if they come from both, you don't.
if i remember correctly....

I agree. My luck, it would be the 1.5 seconds between the sound of impact and my head hitting the steering wheel. When I was asking the GM dealer about what would be affected, he informed me to remove the HU. When the key is first turned to aux, the car does a diagnostic on the dash. If one of your lights does not come on or stays on after three seconds then it is not working properly. If the air bag light fails to come on and go off then the HU should be plugged back in.
