Well, a 1999 6 X 9 would be the same size as a 2002.
Only case it wouldn't be is if the English std. size for measurement changed between that time. And I'm pretty certain the english std has been the same for quite some time.
As far as depth goes, they drop right in, shouldn't have a problem with aftermarkets either.
As far as wiring goes, they sell harnesses that will plug into your gm harness.
Only problem you might run into is if you have the stock 8-6 spkr with an amp.
But that's getting into another subject...
If you're thinking about replacing your stock 6 X 9's, with oem GM, and are paying more than 50 bucks, you're better off with aftermarkets.

yeh, dont bother replacing with stocks... hunt around ebay for good deals on NEW speakers with the warranty and everything. I have Alpine type R in the back, for 6x9's, and it will fit. we needed only a couple basic wiring things to do it. easy as pie. All for a bit over 100 bucks shipping incl.

Just got 6x9 Infinity Kappas and 4x6 JBL GTO for my car from Ebay, should be better than the stock speakers, they're horrible...

Proud as I was at the above mentioned speakersets, I'm sad to say, that not all 6x9s will fit.
The Infinity 935i requires cutting up the bodywork in order to make them fit!!!!
After cutting of the clips attaching the originals, was perfectly able to screw them on the baseplate but that's as far as I got.
Due to the wide plastic body suurounding the Cone (is t´hat what you call it) theres just now way it slides thru the hole.
Needles to say I'm p***ed, that I still have to endure the horrible sound from the originals.

cutting in the bodywork? with my little experience with aftermarket speakers, most are great at just poppin in the factory holster things and everything..
must not be a 6x9 if it is bigger than the stock hole!! lol thats all i can say

sorry I wrote down the wrong type, these I bought:
It's 693.5i, sure it makes sense now
They are simply to wide at the base though the top is 6x9, perfect fit to the baseplate.
I think the pic clarifiesthe problem.
Raising the whole thing would be a solution, but I do not want to screw up the original covers.
Don't want to be a wiseass or something, just a warning to those who like me would like to invest in good speakers.
