ok so yeah im got an hour and a half everyday that i dont have to do anything during school because i have a free block. I will get on how stuff works then if i have any questions after that then i will ask.

Ok so on this page of the How Stuff Works:

it makes that super look alot like a turbo? Is that just a picture showing what a super does and its a bad reference, or is that an actual super?

Also, can you like twin turbo a car and then still have a super on it?

ok so i just finished reading about turbos.

So it said something about carbs and EFI. so is it easier to turbo a car with a carb rather than EFI? or do the computer tuning process make that easier?

So adding a super or a turbo, it increases horsepower, so what would you do to increase torque?

because you can have a lot of horsepower but if you dont have much torque it doesnt mean much, right???

torque is nice, but i can show you plenty of 4 cylinder cars that have a really bad hp to tq ratio that run 10s or faster.....

I'm just checking here, torque is the power from the engine being put the the street? its the measurement?

Also when you have an FI engine you take out the stock intake, or do you build around it?

Also with camshaft tuning i read about a little. What exactly do they mean by tuning that. Wouldnt it stay the same, or what exactly are they doing to it when they say tuning?

How many Valves does each one of the Alero's cylinders have?

When people put supers on to there car is it needed that you replace your stock cams with perfomance ones so that they are able to work faster or harder for all the extra pressure then?

Do valves need to be replaced with performance ones then?

My 2 cents worth....

Superchargers (and probably turbos) DO add torque along with horsepower. Specifically, with the GM S/C on the 2.4L the torque increase is enough to cause some troubles with the tranny (sadly Malibus only came with auto) in 1st gear (slip/chatter) but 2nd on up are very strong (no 1/4 mile racing). The nice thing is that the torque and HP come on immediately, even at low RPMs.

Torque gets you started and HP keeps you moving.

The intake question is answered by 'depends'. With the GM S/C kit the intake is actually built in to the casting for the S/C so it replaces the factory intake altogether. With a turbo setup you have to run tubing for the air coming out of the turbocharger to go into the existing intake system, whether this is replaced with 'better' components would be a seperate issue.

Camshaft tuning involves rotating the camshaft away from the 'normal' timing position, this requires special camshaft drive gears that have adjustable locking points built-in (hard to find if not impossible - some guys build their own). The idea is to alter the timing of when the valves open to allow for improved airflow. It's probably more beneficial to find cams with a longer 'duration' and higher 'lift' which provide for more airflow. Note that this can be very tricky to do properly and can cause other troubles...

The 2.4L engine has 4 valves per cylinder. I don't have a V6...

The GM S/C kit retains the original cams, valves and springs but it doesn't raise boost much - to stay in warranty. It can easily be made to do more with different pulleys to drive it. So nothing special is required BUT I'm gathering parts for a real S/C build (secret cams, p&p head, oversize valves with beehive springs, etc...) as I know this motor can do much more.

Main thing to watch for is sufficient fuel flow. Any boosted engine that runs too lean for any reason will overheat internally and cause lots of trouble. Luckily for me it was just shattered rings....

Most of my comments may not apply to your car, as far as I know there is not any real S/C available for the V6s. Good luck and keep asking questions until you feel that you understand, that's how you learn.

Thanks for that. Yeah I don't have the money to actually do any of this to my car but I just wanna learn about these, and I can't be the only person on here on this website that wants to know more.

So with the valves and cams the thing you want with those are being able to let more air into the cylinders?

Does anybody know how many valves per cylinder the V6 has?

depends on how you look at it some guys will say super because it's instant boost but others will say turbo because they are able to control boost.

If you want to go fast the go supercharger but if you want to go really really fast go turbo it all comes down to personal preference and how much time/money you have to throw into the project.

twin turbos are overrated, you can make just as much and usually more power on a big single turbo, why is it that supra guys almost always switch from twin to a big single?
