Hey,

Well, thought this would be the place to start askin for any advice. I've got a 2dr. 02 Alero. I'm in the works to change the outside look to resemble a NASCAR style, and the interior to a street-car style. I've got ideas...

Under the hood, headers, cold air, throttle body, all from mantapart.com, and the exhaust (already done), is a driver side, side exhaust (will have pics soon), coming out right infront of the read tire.

Body wise, looks like I'll have to get a custom body kit, but, that part's the last. Wheels are going to be an interesting project, as I'm looking for 15 inch steel rims, with rubber to fit to the desired size.

Inside I'm lookin' at putting in racing seats, removable steering wheel, deck, already have the lights, and instrument clusters done.

The reason for this post is two fold. First for me, being able to ask for advice along the way, and second, for all of us... sharing things I've learned, done, and helping anyone who would like to do something similar. (The Side Exaust for example was made with all the parts from the original exaust system, and about $20 worth of 2" pipes from Canadian Tire... and about a weekend of doing it with my dad). Anyway, that's it for now, I'll try and get some pictures up soon... step by step I suppose... but if anyone has any input or advice already, please pass it on.

Later all,
Ej.

Are you trying to get sponsor by mantapart? Sounds like it to since you are using all mantapart only. I would suggest you post some pics of the enigine before you post pic of the body. And see about suggestions from mantapart. They may accept you for sponsor since I saw that their site is adversiting sponsorship (can't remember which circuirt).

awesome idea....questions...
1. what motor do ya have...i assume an eco, but i may be wrong
2. how does it sound with no muffler, or did you use something else like a turbo tube style
3. back seats??are they gonne get pulled and are you gonna put in a rollcage?(if you do a rollcage and have a shop do it, it should cost around 250 to 300 american)
4. the OSV style kit that is being done by SILENTALERO would look the best for the NASCAR look
good luck!

Hey all, and thanks for the welcome, much appreciated.

So far, the engine is stock. I manages (a tip perhaps?) to add a little air into the stock baffle for the air intake. I was amazed how useless it seemed when I opened up the wheel well and looked at it, and saw where the opening for the air is... *sigh*... I took some aluminum sheet metal, and made a small intake underneath on the bottom of the 'tub' (I also shaved off the front bit of plastic that was attached to the radiator, which gave room for the scoop). It works great... haven't lost it yet...

The exhaust, well... I'll have a pic up next weekend. Very simple. But effective. It's loud jturkey69, but it's crisp. From the mount in the center underneath, right after the catalytic converter, I cut it all off... from there I mounted a straight through muffler ($15 from Canadian Tire). Then with a 45 degree bend in a pipe, welded the dampner on (without it, which I tried, it was a little TOO loud). Then I added a split pipe, and welded on two 2 3/4 inch boom tubes... the picture will make more sense... parts total were about 70 bucks, a day of welding, and mounted... works GREAT... used to get about 440 km per tank of gas on the highway, after the exhaust, I'm averaging about 550-600 km! Plus, with the split near the end and the dampner, there's enough of a back pressure that you don't lack any low end torque.

The next step is the cold air intake and the throttle body (want to do those both at the same time). Instead of adding a hood scoop to force air in, I'm planning on having the small window behind the drivers seat changed to plexi glass. Then add an air scoop, feed the hose in along the drivers side floor, and feed into the cool air. Two birds with one stone I suppose (looks, and effectiveness). It's a 2.2 Eco, but it's got potential as I've read on here so many times... smile on my face. But once the first two items are done, the headers would come in.

When it comes to body kits... I run the concern of a low clearence mixed with a cracked body kit... came up with the idea of using sheet metal. Hear me out here...
using my Alero as an example... if I want about a 2 inch ground clearence... that's asking for trouble. So, make the front piece 4 inches. Along the bottom edge, rivet or mount in some other way a piece of sheet metal, with cuts every inch or two inches... making teeth in a way. Over that, duct tape or something that can be put on to cover up, and painted. If I hit something, the small "teeth" of sheet metal bend, not the kit. When it happens, once back in the driveway, bend them back, or replace that segment... cheeper than fixing cracks right?

I've got a lot of ideas floating around in my noggin, and one by one they'll be put onto the Alero. One thing I can suggest right now, and it will be done to the car, but if you do the exhaust the way I have... it's cleaner, louder, better performance, and takes out a lot of 'junk' under the trunk... there's A LOT of room. Enough room, and I kid you not, to cut the original spare tire mount, flip it over, weld it, and be able to mount a full size spare with room to boot! *I've got a pic that I'll scan of the exhaust, pre painted and before mounting, and I'll explain that a little more. You'd be surprised how well it works... and it doens't sound like your car is running on hampster power like most after-marked grape-fruit launcher exhaust ends... it's unique, easy, and cheap. As for HP, it's good for 3000-4500 RPM, you'll notice a diff... probably between 5 and 10 HP, but, it'll push you a little more into your seat for a little longer off the line. Well, that's about it this time... thanks again everyone,

Ej.

I'm headin back to work this week... but I'm hoping by Wednesday the latest I'll have a pic or two up from the exhaust. And if anyone's interested in doing something similar, please don't hesitate to ask for advice or anything, I'd me more than happy to help out...

I take it you guys don't have emissions tests since it doesnt sound like you have a cat. converter on there anymore... anyways, like others have said, sounds interesting, and I've thought about a side-exit exhaust as well, if I were to get a turbo system simply because turbo's hate backpressure... but I'd need to keep the cat. on there to pass an emissions test and I'd want to keep the noise down somewhat at least...

NOPE! The Cat. Converter is on it! I'll have the pictures this week sometime and show it with a bit of explaining if needed. In Alberta here we dont have emissions tests, but in the rest of the provinces we do. Love Alberta I'll keep you all posted for sure.

Hey guys, sorry about the delay... I've been posted to a base (CFB Wainwright) which leaves little to the imagination... as soon as I'm down in Lethbridge for a weekend, I'll get them up.
