It's for ease of wiring.

My old Kenwood was the same way.

Allows for more choices of wiring options + using larger (0/1 gauge) Gauge wire without having to jam both into the same output.

Bad ground or pinched rca???

Most likely a bad head unit or amp though...

Ryan from Ohio will become famous soon enough
Its the head unit more than likely.

Pull the unit out. Take the ground right off the harness of the radio (not the adapter plug) and put it to bolt in the center console.

If that doesnt seem to fix it take another set of RCAs and just run them above the carpet to test if its the RCAs picking up noise. I highly doubt the rcas since you are getting alternator whine.

Lastly your alternator might be on its way out.

road noise or alternator whine is caused by two things. A bad ground to the chassis or inside the amp or RCA feedback which can be caused by the rca jacks being to close to the power wire. The popping is negitive feedback and as said up above can be a bad amp or your RCA jacks.
