I recently had a 1999 GL with the 2.4L and i loved it but i threw a rod and droped a new engine in, then my mom lost her car, so i gave that to her..im lookin to get another alero but i cant decide on which engine i want.

any feedback would be greatly appreciated

from what i gather, if you have the money for intense modding, the ecotec is a gret choice... otherwise i'd just go ahead and say the bigger the better, and get the v6

If you're going for power, get the Ecotec. If you're looking for power AND RESPECT, get the 6

a eco has the best aftermarket out there and can be very powerful.

sounds like an ecotec almost has enough power to pull alot of bondo around.

You just couldn't resist, could ya? Ah, well, ANYBODY can supe up an ecotec. It's not hard to do and the aftermarket is there as i'm sure everyone will agree. But the V6 A/F is stagnant, which makes it MORE of a challenge to fix up and MORE SATISFYING to whoop up on the 4 cyl who can smoke us with a turbo kit off of eBay. That's why I say respect because the V6 is not an easy fix. But this is a long standing debate. In the end, it's all on you.

v6 is limited vs the 2.4 and 2.2 i4's. like they said, the 4 banger has more potential and parts are a hell of alot cheaper and easier to find. i don't think their are many fast 6's on here as compared to some of the 4's that are modded. plus i4's come in a 5-speed manual =)

i have the 2.4L 5-speed and love it.

i4 FTW

the 3400 is limited by the amount of skill and time you have for it. I.E. Blackjacks car was a monster. I havent seen a 4 cyl on these boards that would come close to it. Of course there is spyhunter over on gagt.com running 12.4's in his 2.4l but he has years of test and tune into that car so that is one of the more extreme examples. If you are planning just bolt ons the 3400 is better imo. If you are going further than that it depends if you want to buy kit parts or learn a lot and then piece something together for the 3400 which has more potential than some give it credit for.

if you wanna spend the money...if you're not looking to do any major overhauls, i'd say the 3.4, moreso a newer one with the new LIM gasket so that doesn't become an issue.
