Cylinder Misfire, Etc

So I've had a problem with a cylinder 1 misfire for quite some time now. I've taken it to a dealership 3 or 4 times, but the "service engine soon light" keeps coming on. Now I'm out of warranty, but the problem never got fixed. If I take it to the dealership will they still fix it since it's the same problem? Or am I screwed?

And this, which may or may not be related: About a month ago it started running rough and has trouble accelerating when I first start it up, but when it gets to peak temp it runs fine. My friend suggested I may need to clean my mass air flow sensor? I'm not sure where that would be on my car. It just started doing this when it got really cold (it was like 20 or 30 below a few weeks ago). I have an '01 with the 2.4L.

Any help would be great!

your MAF is going to be on your intake tubing between the filter and throttle body

I had the same problem but with the 3.4l. My problem was the head gasket. It wasn't fun to change either. It maybe easyer on the 4 cylinder though. Hope you figure out what is wrong with it.

You wouldn't have a picture of where that is exactly? Or an explanation? Sorry, I'm only an ASPIRING car guy. Thanks.

There is only 1 sensor hooked up between the Trottle body and air filter. I know I have a 99 with the 2.4, it points towards the battery if that helps.

follow the big black tube from the air box over towards the throttle body, it's the only wire coming off of it, pretty hard to miss

The 4-cylinders don't have a MAF.

I'm assuming that's an abbreviation for mass air flow sensor? Does the four cylinder have an equivilant?

map sensor, but for cylinder misfire did they change plugs, wires? or lastly the coil.

last thing you'd check into for misfires on a single cylinder is compression test the cylinder but it's highly doubtful you're gonna have to get that far.

Humm, the only wire that is coming out of the tubing, pointing the battery is the IAT ( Intake Air temperature ) Sensor. Is it the same thing?

I'm not sure. I did take the engine cover off to check the coils. They all looked great, no corrosion or anything. I may have my friend who is a mechanic work on it. I'm sick of taking it to a dealership that will only solve my problem for a short time instead fixing the cause of the issue.

Well, here's the basic rundown of what can cause a misfire on a 2.4

Spark Plug
Spark Plug boot
Ignition coil
Ignition Module
Ignition coil cover
Fuel Injector

When you have that coil cover off (the big white piece), I would check to make sure there's no evidence of arcing or other marks inside and outside of it.

Thanks for the list. I'll see if I can check any of these out.

Angry

Well I took it to the dealership that I've taken it to before. They're trying to charge me $375 for a new #1 fuel injector that has already been changed four times.

I called them back and told them I wasn't going to pay for it, so they offered to look at it some more and try to fix it. I'm currently waiting for their call, but I'm not going to pay for it (at least not the whole thing) because this has been an ongoing issue.
