passkey - another one

Hi guys

I have had my 01 alero for about 4 months. this morning when I went to start the car it fired up idled really low for a few second and died. I tried starting again and it just cranked. I looked on this site about the passlock issue and let it sit for 2 mon and it started. I Use my car for work and I cannot have it die in the middle of the day. So I started the bypass. With the car running i cut the yellow wire and then got hte resstance Each time i used a volt tester to get the resistance I got a difffrent result but always between 1450 and 1500. So I wired new resistors in but I have my security light on all the time. I tried disconnecting the battery but have had no luck in clearing the light. What are my option to ge tthat light to go off and make sure that teh bypass actually works. Last thing i want is my car not to start on my way to work

how did u wire in the resistor? like this? yellow wire - Resistor -ground If so then that is correct. If you just tied it inline like this yellow wire - resistor - yellow wire, then this is not correct.

I wired it Yellow resistor ground.

My main questionn ishow to disable the security light and to make sure that I used the correct combination of resistors correctly

the light should turn off.. maybe ur off in the measurment.

I believe that the light staying on is the norm after doing a bypass.

If the car starts without idling then dying you're fine i guess

Thanks for your help.

There are just 3 things

1. the light on the dash really bugs me. So I was wondering is it on because I amight have used the wrong combination of resistors or will it always be one the bypass is done . In that Case how do I go about getting rtid of that light.

2. My main concetn I gues this should be #1 is if I take my car to the dealer and they clear the codes will my car still or will the light just coem on again.

3. How can I confirm if I have measured the resistance correctly?

from what i've heard about the bypass.. the security light will constantly be illuminated, but it means nothing. If it bugs you that much, take the instrument panel apart and remove the light, and how you do that is totaly up to you..

Lol Ive seen people just put electrical tape over their instrument panel in that area. or they tape a little square of paper over it.

Guys HELP

i think that i did not get the resistance correctly.

how do I properly go about getting the resistance?. shoudl I do it with the car on, ignition on, or all off. etc.

can someone pleae give me detailed instructions

Does the Alero GX have passlock/bypass. I was lead to belive there needed to be a chip of some sort in the key for this to work. I'm in the same boat as chaimv, I dont understand how to meassure the resistance, ohms law? (I'm clueless sorry)

not a chip.....its rhe key's resistance...you will need the dealer to check the resistance for the car and give you a new key

Its passkey not passlock... Two totallly diff things.

No chip, no key resistance. The passkey works on the profile of the key. If the key and cylinder become worn they do not match properly. Your security light remains on at this point.
Go to the junkyard and get a new key& cylinder for around $35.00.

In know this is an old thread, but Ive had that issue and I tried the resistor bypass- security light went out and the car still only decides to start when it wants to. Ive heard the theft deterent module in the bcm dies after around 8 years, but ive heard you can get the ecm reflashed to eliminate the pain in the as# passlock system completly. I have yet to send my ecm to this site http://www.nordstromsfactoryperforma...mode=catdealer a dealer should have the capabilities to do this also. THIS SHOULD BE A PERMANENT SOLOUTION.

seems a little overkill to send your computer out to get reflashed rather then just splicing in a resistor between 2 lines

My cars not going on the road till september so Ive got all summer to sort the issue out. Ive already spliced the resistor in the circuit and the security light is out, but I still occasionally have starting issues (as in the fuel pump not turning on) so my guess is the theft deterent module (which are known to die) imbeded in the bcm is on its way out- thats why I think a reflash is the best way to go
