i am really bored and broke. i was wondering what mods i could do to my alero without having to spend any cash. so i came up with the idea of taking the air box off of the air filter. cones are exposed. why cant factory ones be 2? someone let me know.

cuz the factory filters are a flat style...not a cone(which a cone can easialy be hose clamped to a pipe) So in other words....without an airbox, you would have no way to hold the filter in a way that all air entering motor would pass thru it first. open up, or take out your airbox, and u'll see what Im saying. It just wont work.

if you really want you could take a dremel tool and cut out a section of your airbox but im not sure how much help it would give you. otherwise you could always start on apperance stuff, clear corners and tinted tails are fairly cheap mods.

well, ya that would work too. ^^^^ But i wouldnt do it.......the performance gains would be un-noticable. My advise is save up for a cold/warm air intake, or just leave it stock.

did you see that on Matts car when you were over getting your DonkeyPunchPerformance heads on? i did that to my airbox a LONG time ago and gave the box to matt for him to use.

unless you have done this, i wouldnt say the gains are unnoticable. ANY free mod is a good mod for broke/cheap people. and anything is damn near better than the stock airbox.

dremel out all of the baffles in the lid of the stock airbox and swiss cheese out the bottom, it will work just as good as any short ram, and IMO short ram is better than CAI.

because the difference between intake air temps AFTER passing through a 170* intake manifold coming in from ANY intake source (short ram, cai, whatever) is going to be very small, if any at all. and with short ram at least you have increase throttle response, and no worries of hydrolock.

edit, i'd also like to say yea, i dont have any proof, but it seems like common sense to me, and yes i'm no expert but i have ran various short ram and CAI on a few different cars, and the difference is nada.

well, i can agree with your thought process...

however, i do not agree with your conclusion.

when you have a short ram, your pulling in 200* air from the engine bay, which is a bad, bad, bad thing and throttle response is NOT improved when your at full op temp in the summer, throttle response is actually worse IMO (ive had both on my monte before the turbo)

look at it this way...

a true cold air intake PROPERLY placed, will have no issues with hydrolock (ever hear of water injection? similar things will happen in the rain with any CAI). as long as you do not submerse the filter in water completely, you will be fine (i live in MN, trust me, i drove in my fair share of water lol).

now take into consideration that you pull in 70-90* air with a CAI, that is actually cooling the upper intake and lower intakes rather than keeping them at one temp.

your car WILL run cooler from a true CAI (this i have personally tested).

air will not heat up quicker than what the engine is sucking it in, so the air that you see coming from the CAI will be cooler than any air you pull from a WAI.

plus, when you have a WAI and a CAI, your IAT sensor is seeing that hot air/cool air being pulled in.

with a WAI, your PCM will back off the timing because of the hot air your pulling in.

with a CAI, your PCM will NOT back off the timing because the air is still cool (ambiant temp), rather than hot air.l

I've cleared my corners and started painting my interior. Im just getting out of some debt right now. I guess I'll have to wait untill next spring to do some real mods on my car. I should at least have my interior painting done by then.

This will sound lame but what I did to my airbox was I took that little elbow looking resistor out. It attaches to the bottom of the air box and goes into the wheel well fender thingy. Not that it gave me HUGE hp or anything, but there is more air flow now.

^^^ya you could do that too...its free hehehe. I did that to my wagon, + a K&N drop in filter and I could feel the difference. But the tauras actually has a resinator thing on there thats very restrictive......so out it came.

a cone filter is only like 20-30 bucks not sure if you mean cheaper then that but I took my stock box off and put the cone on the end of the intake untile I got the pipe to run off the TB.

I'll play with it a little bit. The cone idea doesn't sound bad.

OT but i cant resist, im pretty sure its somewhere between what you get from a Greddy sticker and what you get from a NOS sticker, so my best guess puts it at around 25-167 rwhp!! haha

That's what I did, yeah...you might not have the money right now...believe me, I know, but the second thing I did to my 2002 was drop a k&n in. The first thing I did was the tint job. Slowly but surely...you'll be doing things here and there with the alero. Keep your head up...there's quite a bit you can do to these cars, look at all the other people on this site. That's my 2 cents!
